NHL 13 News Post

Capturing video footage of NHL 13 gameplay wasn't allowed at E3, but that didn't stop Gamereactor from doing it.

NHL 13 was an alpha build at E3 and the game releases on September 11th, so they have time to polish it up. From the looks of the video, the 2 gamers had no idea what they were doing, but it does offer the first glimpse of real gameplay.

Keep it civil, I like all the great hockey fans we have in this forum.. the only forum on OS I visit on a regular basis throughout the day.

We all want a great hockey game, honestly.. that's all we want and it's ok to be unhappy with the past few versions as well as be giddy for the next version.

Oh I still play 11, I never bought 12. Was unaware this slider was broken in 12 that's a shame, offense is too easy without any bad passes

I agree with RealmK, the gameplay can't be worse in any way with the improvements. The only problem I see so far is Stamkos made Brett Clark look like a bantam-age player in the alpha video, but, it is Brett Clark, and the defensive user wasn't trying to show the ability of the defenceman.

Hopefully they'll find a happy medium so the top 20 players in the league don't destroy every defenceman.

The real question is the AI IQ. Hopefully rebuilding teams can change their strategies to fit their team. I want teams to have personality, I want to have to shut down opposing players with my top defensive payers, and I want to have my 4th line be scored on more often than not if I leave them out against the top unit of the opposing team.

Fully agree. That's one of the major things this game lacks. I believe player separation and team separation/strategies/talent go hand in hand with each other. If Crosby, Ovechkin, Datsyuk, Malkin, Stamkos, etc. all show that they are elite and more talented then everyone else in this game, then the teams should play how they are in real life. Where the Pens have more than one star player and should dominate games and the Lightning for example only have one superstar and the supporting cast isn't quite as talented (besides St. Louis and Lecavlier). The Lightning should dominate while Stamkos is on the ice but be a little more on their heels when their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th lines are out.

However, this coaching thing could throw a bone into all of this. If different coaches have different styles I don't want a more defensive style coach go to a team with a crap load of talent like the Pens. Obviously this is just me talking before we have found out what the coaching thing is all about but all in all team separation is an absolute must. I don't think I can go another year with this game if I can't tell the difference between the Islanders and the Kings.

Exactly. I know that personally (and hope this doesn't kill me on any GM Connected leagues) I always build a defence-first team, so will be playing some form of the trap. If I play against Pittsburgh and they are also trapping, I will be very upset, because clearly they are an offensive team.

I just hope that 10 seasons into a GM Mode, if, for example, Detroit winds up rebuilding, that they change up their strategies to best fit their new team mold, OR, the players they draft and trade for, fit the puck possession type game they currently play.

I just hope they scaled passing up a lot to appeal to the new people at E3 and show off the skating. I remember last year when the incorporated the ability to break the glass, the team at E3 made it so the glass would literally break every couple shifts, just to show off the fact that they put it in the game.

I can only HOPE that's the reason, because we all know sliders can only take care of a small matter, and that's usually only offline.

They still do have like 5 weeks left in the dev cycle, and I hope they saw the feedback from that clip. It's been an overwhelmingly high amount of people talking about the rocket passing sticking like glue to the sticks.

If they change that, I believe this will be my favorite NHL to date. Passing is such a large part of the game however, so without that fixed, the game will be average imo

Guys its only June and the Kings are still nursing their hangover...we should all be playing baseball....Just kidding. We really are only
in the early stage of this and Im looking forward to the demo. Guys should'nt be fighting over the game. It will be released and 3 things are for sure:
1) Guys that want a 100% NHL sim will be pissed and shred the game
2) Guys that want arcade hockey will find glitches and wait for patches that allow them to plaster people through the boards (please no EA dont!)
3) The rest of us will find some things we hate about it, tweak the sliders and only fix some of the stuff, and then come to terms with what have and enjoy the game.
Overall I'm expecting a big improvement based on the little I've seen. I could be wrong. I am expecting to be annoyed by some stuff but so be it, I'm looking forward to it. Again guys dont fight....everyone is entitled to their opinion or view on the game...even those who say its going to blow chunks and those saying it will be the greatest game ever. In the end we will all fall into one of the three groups above and thats part of what these forums are for....talking, praising, or complaining about the game. Its all good as long as no attacks each other.

So very well said, Jake.

No sense in me even trying to add on to this...so I'll just keep quite.

i just played another game of NHL12 in my BGM (on the 4th season, approx. only 10 games simmed) yesterday.

ARRRGGGHHH.....i hope EA will address the stupid goalie who will chase the puck outside the trapezoid. ALSO chasing the loose puck even if there's a teammate and opposing player near it.

The game was "borked" when it came out? How so? And it's broken now? Sure, there are some elements to gameplay that are awful (figure skating puck control, bouncing off hits, some AI issues, etc.) but the game is hardly broken.
Well, not "broken" in the sense that you couldn't play a hockey game, but NHL 12 did introduce a swathe of unwelcome issues. The penalties, freezing and custom music killed it for a lot of customers. It really was a backwards step

I can't really take anything from that video, faces seem better, some new camera angles but the promised enhancements are more to do with gameplay so until the core fanbase play it for themselves in their own setups, it's impossible to tell if 13 is going to be a return to at least the standard of 11 or, here's hoping, turn out to be the best year ever for the franchise. Cautiously optimistic.
