NBA Live 13 News Post

Kotaku's Owen Good has posted his NBA Live 13 hands-on preview, as he goes over the presentation and new passing mechanics of the game.

There still will be icon passing for those who prefer it or play with it out of habit. But a simple A button with Stoudemire is going to key the entry to Anthony, however clumsy it was. The same single button, with Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook on the perimeter, sent a longer pass out to Thabo Sefolosha, who had come free from an off-the-ball screen, and not to Kevin Durant, who had set it and was in fact nearer, having rolled back to the hoop. That's what I wanted to do, too. This is tied to an AI system in which players are supposed to recognize the most appropriate target in the area you're facing with the left stick.

That's the direction of the pass. The type of pass will work in your favor if you have a skilled passer as much as it will be an adventure in the hands of someone who isn't. Another example: Mario Chalmers, the Heat's point guard, saw Chris Bosh across the lane on the block. Bosh is 6-11; Chalmers is 6-2. A chest pass to Bosh's numbers in this situation is high enough to get deflected. Chalmers slammed a high, one-handed overhand bounce pass instead, hitting Bosh square to begin his move to the basket.

College Hoops 2k8 lets you choose what type of pass you want to make. So there is no good excuse why it's not in basketball games.

Just FYI. I should "see" NBA Live 13 on Monday. Not sure how playable it will be, but I will definitely see what's up. Just follow me on Twitter, I'll be giving updates throughout E3.

I like that passes will be smarter. In the other game, I hate when I pass I get the wrong type of passes. Like getting a bounce pass in very congested paint or a handoff when there is someone is between you.

I always like Live. Competition is great and it forces games to not slip up.
2k12 also made the same claims about making the right passes, so until we see it in action we wont know. I am sure there will be instances where the wrong pass will be made.

Those attending E3, is taking camera footage permitted?

Lighting also changes from venue to venue, and even among teams who play in the same arena. The Los Angeles Lakers darken the seating to highlight the court, and the stars playing on it, or sitting by it. The Clippers, in the same building, light up the seats more. NBA Live 13 will reflect that. The crowd, something a lot of sports video games seem to skimp on, was very well done, with varied patrons (including some for the opposition) in decent resolution. I was told some atmospheric sound effects—crowd noise, sneaker squeak, player chatter— come from ESPN audio.

Players are large and recognizable in their modeling though some texture work still needs to be done. They've done a good job with Dwyane Wade's baby face and Tyson Chandler's beard has the appropriate level of mange. Players also can be picked out by how they act. A pet peeve I have when playing with an unfamiliar team is when I've rebounded the ball, the team's in transition, and I can't spot the point guard who should bring it up, especially if it's a taller guard. But I could recognize Westbrook on sight for the outlet pass, without looking for his uniform number or name in the player call-out.

Those things really stood out 2 ME

Hmm very interesting. I have to admit this they took what needed to be improved on in the passing game in 2K and made it more about the ratings and AI smarter passing. As long as it can't be cheesed with alley oops I see no problem with it. I think the only option in any basketball game is to give the user complete control with crazy button combinations if you want total control for a bounce or lob, alleys or you have to take somethings out of the user hands and let the "ratings" and abilities determine things. I actually expect 2K to have something similar or total control passing

Yea, they just pooped all over SA, again. Heh....

Seriously, THAT'S apart of what I was saying in my comment earlier. That damn, unnecessary defensive squat that has plagued this series for a while. THEN u get that squat/strafe deally virtually the whole time when trying to defend and even when dribbling. That HAS to go.

I have mixed feelings about this passing mechanic. It makes sense and sounds good, but it doesn't seem like it's going to cut back on profanity-inducing moments when I aim the stick at one guy and pass it to someone else. All it's going to do is create an excuse. But yes, I have icon passing I can always go back to, but then this just means 2k or Live can't do analog passing right. At this point it's probably too early to pass judgment so we'll see.

good read, i look forward to what they will be bring out, i already preordered 2k13 (pc version), going to wait to see live 13 gameplay before i preorder it, hopefully they release it for vita,

the body still look hunched and cartoony from that screen (but the colors look great, unlike 2k color palette , but have to wait for a clearer image to judge

I'm actually pretty excited for the new NBA Live I'm not gonna lie.. I just hoped that they have improved a lot of things

I'm definitely excited for this game. I'll try to get both 2K and Live this year because I think they both have something big planned. Just the fact that they have ESPN branding with Mike Breen and JVG doing the commentary makes me happy. I do remember reading on Pastapadre that the CEO of Live said they wouldn't be on the same level as 2K the first year but I think the competition will be close. If only they keep their Become Legendary mode and implement Game Face and crew.

That screenshot is most likely nba elite 11 with nba live 13 printed on it.

There's no way they would bring back those squatting animations and same skinny player models of the past.

They're improving the game in areas that it has been lacking in the past.

# 40 LionsFanNJ @ 06/03/12 05:57 PM
If they're scanning the arenas I wonder if they'll get into Barclays once its done before the season/release. I just have this feeling neither game with have the right Nets stuff in it, and would annoy me.

The passing sound miles better than the cluster**** that 2k is sometimes. But it still worries me that by the sounds of it the man you want to pass too many not be the person getting the ball.
