Did you guys notice the new poke check animations? Watch the clip from the slide of Kane and the defenseman. The defenseman hits the TOP of Kane's stick and knocks the puck away. Weber also makes a different poke check. These could be awesome. Just imagine controlling a defenseman in front of the goal. This might let you use the stick lift button (A) to hit the defender's stick to prevent him from receiving a pass instead of checking him or getting extremely lucky with the timing of the poke check like in previous NHL games. This could be amazing!

wow this is basically a speed burst feature.......dont want to hate but in essence, that's what it is....a feature EA ommited at one time and now re-intergrating it to make it look 'brand new' and labelling it as revolutionary.

Wow I'm very impressed, and loved it. I will be buying NHL13 this year for sure.

It looks like sports games will be taking over my Xbox big time.

Great job EA!

This makes me wonder how people thought pre-NHL 13 EA Sports Hockey games were realistic. They didn't even follow the laws of Momentum or Physics in general. I for one am glad this game has Momentum...1 step closer to realism.

Judging by video #2, it looks like they fixed the Predators' jerseys this year. The blue is finally the correct navy shade instead of the royal blue they've got in NHL 12.

Just the new animations alone improve their skating never mind adding in momentum.
Just look at the preds defensemens transitions from forward to backwards its dead on.
So i think that alone is gonna help 13 big time and with all that momentum and AI gravy poured on top and the Kings in the cup Finals whats not to like

Finally players like Kreider, Hagelin and GABs will be noticeably different than Penner, Pronger, and Chara. This is very promising.

Not exactly.
It seems like they've kind of taken a bit of a page from the FIFA book.
In FIFA you can jog with your player, but when you hold the right trigger you full on run with the ball. The downside to this is that you're moving the ball further in front of you, and you can't make quick turns, or stops.
NHL 12 didn't have that, but with 13 it looks like it will.
You can go full out, but you risk losing the ability to shoot accurately, and make tighter turns.
Also, that first bit of speed will help a lot for playmakers.
Guys like Andy McDonald (I'm a Blues fan, so i will stick to what i know) make their living on the Power Play with moves like that. He's so good at getting into the corners, or behind the net, and using his small size, and quick feet to get himself open on the ice and draw defenders to him.
Those small touches will really help elevate players, and go that much further towards making the game realistic.

I didn't play '12 this year but it looks like this game is set up to be pretty darn good compared to my NHL '11, So I'm excited!

Very impressed. Haven't purchased a hockey since the 90's. Hopefully they can introduce this technology into a certain NFL game. I will definitely be following this game though. Never thought I would say that about a hockey game again.

The NHL series is one of the best for a reason. And they are doing it again. Very impressed.

Ditto on ur first 3 sentences. Not a big hockey fan but I've been wanting a hockey game for the longest. Each yr I've been wanting to pull the trigger but then I play the demos for a while and the desire eventually goes out the window because of how stiff the game still looked and played. If I were a big fan, I woulda bought em like I do with Madden, regardless of how stiff the game is.

That being said, I really feel like THIS is the yr I finally get an NHL game since PS1. The vids look incredibly good with how these elements have come together. This tech most likely WILL be shared wit Madden.

Really liking what I'm seeing here.

The way the defensemen pivot from forward to backward looks great. And not being able to skate backward as fast as forward anymore is long overdue.

Very happy to see many things these vids show. I'm just hoping now that all this physic based stuff applies to the AI controlled players as well. If so...these upgrades could possibly lead to the sloppier play many of us having been talking about.

THANK YOU, EA.

Man, I really hope this physics stuff is implemented correctly at launch. It looks so awesome in the videos.

# 17 ComaFaction @ 06/02/12 06:13 PM
I really hope that, with physics built into the skating and the possibility to work an effective cycle, plays can skate or power their way through a board pin, based on physics, as opposed to automatically being sucked into a "pinned to the boards" animation. Being able to lose a guy on the half-boards with a quick shift will be totally negated if it can just be countered with a board pin as it is now.

I'm really starting to dig this new skating. It's really cool how the defenseman reacts to the offensive player with stops and starts. It just looks really natural and the fact that they actually stop like a real hockey player is awesome. You can see that explosiveness of the stride. Do they need to add that much snow, no but it shows that they finally stop and start.

The other part I love is the Defensman chasing the player down. In the vid Doughty caught someone from behind and knocked the puck away. It looked really sweet and natural. The one thing I'm scared about though is that players may get by Defenseman for breakaways too much. Obviously we will have to wait until we play it for ourselves but it just seems that way so far. I just don't want to have the D-man get beat and have to chase him down going forward every time. Really D-men are only a little bit slower skating backwards (great D-Men are just as fast) than the forwards are skating forward. I'm hoping these moments just happen when the D-man makes a mistake and is caught off balance.

To me the top end speed looks a little bit unnatural right now. It just looks a little too much like the push puck feature in 12. We will see how it plays out though. Hopefully there will be sliders to help balance it out so maybe it won't look so unnatural. However they are obviously still working on trying to figure everything out with it. I just finally give them credit on trying something new, to make the game fresh. Between this, the change in AI, and strategies this game has a lot of potential. I am in no way expecting any of these aspects to be perfect but at least there will be a start. As long as there are no game killers I will be happy.
