Electronic Arts today unveiled five game-changing innovations that will bring revolutionary changes to EA SPORTS FIFA 13 along with the largest and deepest feature set in the history of the franchise.

"We are perfecting the best sports game in the world with innovations that capture all the drama and unpredictability of real-world football," said David Rutter, Executive Producer for FIFA 13. "These are game-changing innovations that will revolutionize our artificial intelligence, dribbling, ball control and collisions to create a true battle for possession across the entire pitch, and deliver freedom and creativity in attack."

The most sophisticated artificial intelligence ever achieved for the FIFA franchise will drive FIFA 13 on HD consoles and PC. All-new Attacking Intelligence enables players to analyse space, work harder and smarter to break down defenses, and think two plays ahead. Players now possess the intelligence to create, curve, or alter runs to capitalize on openings as they occur, make runs that pull defenders out of position to open passing channels for teammates, and better position themselves for new attacking opportunities.

In FIFA 13 every touch matters with the most comprehensive and intuitive dribbling system ever developed. Inspired by the world’s best footballer, Lionel Messi, Complete Dribbling enables players to face their opponent and use precise dribble touches combined with true 360° mobility with the ball, so it’s easier to be more creative and dangerous in 1v1 opportunities. Players change direction quicker, are more explosive accelerating with the ball, and are more effective shielding defenders for longer stretches. FIFA 13 1st Touch Control transforms the way players control the ball, eliminating near-perfect touch for every player on the pitch, and creating variety and uncertainty around ball control. Factors such as defensive pressure, trajectory of the ball, and velocity of the pass now impact a player’s first touch, creating more opportunities for defenders to win back possession.

The second generation of the Player Impact Engine expands physical play from just collisions to off-the-ball battles between players. Defenders push and pull for position, and use their size and strength to win possession or force opponents into poor touches and decisions before the ball arrives. FIFA 13 Tactical Free Kicks provides the tools to create dangerous and unpredictable free kicks utilising the most skillful players on the pitch. Position up to three attacking players over the ball and utilise dummy runs and more passing options to create elaborate free kicks. Opponents can counter by adding or subtracting players to the wall, creeping the wall forward, or sending a bullet man to intercept the pass or block the shot.

FIFA 13 will also feature:
  • Improved Career Mode with major changes developed in response to requests from the most passionate fans of the franchise
  • New features to enhance the massive EA SPORTS FIFA online offering, including improvements to the wildly popular Head-To-Head Seasons mode
  • Multiple new features and benefits to EA SPORTS Football Club, the live service that is the heartbeat of FIFA
  • Complete authenticity with more than 500 officially licensed clubs.

Additional new modes and features will be announced in the months ahead.

FIFA 13 will be available in stores world-wide this fall for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system with PlayStation Move support, Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system with Kinect™, PlayStation®Vita handheld entertainment system, Wii™, PC, PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, Nintendo 3DS™, PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, iPhone®, iPad®, iPod® touch and other mobile platforms. The game has not yet been rated.

**Based on total sales in 2011 according to the NPD.

Key Features
  • Attacking Intelligence — All-new positioning intelligence infuses attacking players with the ability to analyze plays, and to better position themselves to create new attacking opportunities. Players will work harder and smarter to break down defenses, make runs that pull defenders out of position, and open passing channels for teammates. Plus, players possess an off-the-ball vision and the ability to think two plays ahead to create, curve, or alter runs to capitalize on openings as they occur.
  • Complete Dribbling — Make every touch matter with complete control of the ball. Take on defenders with the freedom to be more creative in attack. Players are more explosive accelerating with the ball, and utilize precise dribble touches with true 360° mobility with the ball while facing a defender. Face an opponent to threaten attack while moving with the ball in any direction to dodge tackles, or turn and shield the ball, maintaining position, and holding off defenders for longer stretches.
  • FIFA 13 1st Touch Control — A new system eliminates near-perfect control for every player by creating uncertainty when receiving difficult balls. Poor passes are harder to control, enabling defenders to capitalize on errant balls and poor touches. Multiple factors such as defensive pressure, trajectory of the ball, and velocity of the pass all factor into a player’s success. Players with better control and skill stand out. Fewer perfect touches, the potential to over hit passes, more opportunity for loose balls, and greater balance between defending and attacking.
  • Player Impact Engine — The second generation of the award-winning physics engine expands physical play from just collisions to off-the-ball battles, giving defenders more tools to win back possession. Defenders can use their body to win possession, push and pull for position, and utilize their size and strength to force opponents into poor touches and decisions before the ball arrives.
  • FIFA 13 Tactical Free Kicks — Create dangerous and unpredictable free kicks. Position up to three attacking players over the ball and confuse opponents with dummy runs, more passing options, and more elaborate free kicks. Opponents can counter by adding or subtracting players to the wall, creeping the wall forward, or sending a bullet man to intercept the pass or block the shot.
  • New Passes — Two new passing options give players the ability to finesse passes over the outstretched leg of a defender or play lower trajectory lofted through balls into space or to teammates.
  • FIFA 13 Fundamentals — Essential elements have been refined to make the experience more authentic. Referees will now make better decisions awarding fouls and cards, goalkeeper intelligence has been improved, and Tactical Defending has added lateral mobility for players in defensive containment. Plus, new animations have been developed for off-balance shots, 180° shots, and celebrations.
  • Complete Authenticity — Over 500 officially licensed clubs and more than 15,000 players.

That's some great info there!

EA physics engine for all Ea Sports games...this game sounds sick..i like the fact that now the players will position themselves instead of running straight

Oh my..ladies and gents this has just become my most anticipated title of the year!

You know these facts right here sound concrete as they have substance over them (technical explanations of AI, improvement over dribbling, enhanced phsycality engine etc..) so we all know that these aren't just baseless.

I have full faith in Rutter and his team, these guys know how to make a soccer game!

Can't wait.

I consider myself an EA fan boy from way way back, loved all. Fifa games I picked back up 2 years ago.

As I've grown older I've learned something just through these two years.
While other EA Sports games give false hope with the hype machine months before .... The Fifa Developers deliver - They get it!

Other teams should take note and spend some time around them or drink the water their drinking or something lol.

Played old Fifas back in the day.

Very good news about FIFA 13. These sound like some more great improvements on top of what was already a great game. With this, and the news about Madden and NCAA, could it be that EA has started to listen to it's customers and are making improvements based on what they want to see in the games?

We'll see how good the single player AI is. PES is still better in this area. It's pretty funny that Rutter uses the phrase "unpredictability of real-world football", as this is exactly what this game lacks in comparison to its competition.

Are CPU players still going to be stuck to a region of the pitch when attacking? Will attack-only players still be the only ones scoring? Defenders and defensive mids can also score during the run of play, severely lacking in this game. Makes everything predictable and stale. What about fouls, will they finally get this right? Hopefully there is a slider for this, as the physical side of the sport needs to be replicated properly.

A no doubt purchase on the PC, if only for the modding capability to enhance career mode to a more realistic level. Just hope the gameplay is improved for once. I still can't believe this game has won so many awards with such predictable and lacking gameplay.

Referees making better decisions? I hope that means MORE foul calls.

Seriously? Who would use Fifa on Kinect? How would they even implement that?

"Players change direction quicker..."
Are you kidding me? One of the biggest issues with the game right now is that players turn far too easily.

Giving people more control with the ball at their feet is the last thing this series needed.

A positive is the little quick finesse pass that was mentioned to quickly lob the ball to a player when pressured.

At this point, if they could have 6-7 fouls called on the AI in FIFA 12, I'd play that for quite awhile.

Krebstar - I felt the same way when combining the dribbling/turning with the ability for offensive players to think two plays ahead, "inspired by Messi." That's what makes Messi great - hoping this won't apply to every damn player like usual.

This made me happy.

FIFA 13 Tactical Free Kicks — Create dangerous and unpredictable free kicks. Position up to three attacking players over the ball and confuse opponents with dummy runs, more passing options, and more elaborate free kicks. Opponents can counter by adding or subtracting players to the wall, creeping the wall forward, or sending a bullet man to intercept the pass or block the shot.

Improving the officiating makes free kicks more relevant. It was rare that I got a free kick in FIFA 12. I'm encouraged by these improvements.

Looking forward to this one. Cool list of improvements though I would've liked to see something on attacking styles & more on defending.

Couldn't agree more. Players turn and change direction far too quickly; but I feel like it's a matter of tweaking the sliders and attributes. I don't have my Xbox in front of me, but I know that I play on slow with edited sliders. I have found that under these settings, players with acceleration, agility, and sprint speed ratings in the 30s-40s play more realistically than anyone else.

Cautiously optimistic although hearing things like "players will turn quicker" and the AI will think two plays ahead scares the hell out of me.

The Attacking AI needs to be addressed in terms of attack variance (possession vs long ball/direct play).

A Foul Slider is a MUST if they don't address the refs.

# 15 ProbieByKO @ 05/17/12 07:47 PM
This all sounds great... on paper.

First of all let me say I am a big FIFA fan, and look forward to the game every year.

Every year we get excited about new additions and improvements in EA Sports games.
Then, days after release we are all left scratching our heads over the freezing issues, bugs, poorly functioning new features, and general unplayability of the game.

I bought FIFA 12 in February of this year, 4 months after the release and several patches later, and I will buy FIFA 13 in February of next year, also after it has been "finished." I still get a new game every 12 months, but without the issues.

That being said, I'm looking forward to February!

# 16 RA30 @ 05/19/12 05:48 AM
EA should just address the problems in FIFA 12 first.
Some examples are lack of fouls, every player turning and cutting like they are Messi, AI teams all playing the same etc.

Young players also shouldnt start out with low physical attributes like speed and agility. These attributes dont really grow with age and it's either a player has it or not.

# 17 tHurley2010 @ 05/19/12 04:05 PM
I think they are addressing the referee issue by changing up the way the refs referee. I think if the ability for the players to turn quickly can be toned down with sliders then that's fine.

I'm excited about the attacking AI and the free kicks. Hopefully they can put it all together this year.

There was no such slider this year, why would you even begin to think they'll add it to 2013?

100% agree. It's hard for quality youth to break into the squad because they're behind the 8ball from the start when it come to physical attributes.

What kind of question is that? I mean honestly.

Because they're trying to improve the game and listen to their fan base? And a foul slider is something that people have been clamoring for.

Krebstar said a few posts above that if the AI had about 6 to 7 foul calls a game he'd play '12 for a while. He's not alone there.

There's clearly still a possibility for a foul slider. I don't understand why you're so quick to rule it out even though the game is still what, 5 months away?

With your thought process you'd rule out any sort of improvements to the game just because they weren't in the previous iteration of the game, which makes absolutely no logical sense at all.
