According to Kotaku's Owen Good, NBA 2K12 Legends will not be available online.
Quote:
None of the 34 teams unlockable in "NBA's Greatest" will be available for online multiplayer modes. There had been some confusion, even hope that they would, as earlier reports suggested that once a team is unlocked from "NBA's Greatest" it is available across all modes of play. 2K Sports just confirmed for me all the modes in which these teams can be used, and online multiplayer isn't one of them.
Don't think there is a viable excuse for not being able to use them:
•Balance issues=unranked only
•not having matching rosters= teams are already on disc, allow those who unlocked them to play with said teams and lock them out for those who haven't until they do so.
•Different eras=standardize games to be played under modern rules or allow this to be chosen when setting up. Keep modern presentation to streamline it.
•technical issues adding teams= really?
I may not be a dev but this shouldn't be impossible....hoping for better news on this.
Perhaps it has to do with the moneyball tournaments the game always opens up with? Perhaps they don't want players competing with those teams and didn't have time to lock them out?
Just spitballing, I don't really think that's plausible.
Anything you can implement offline you can implement online.
There's more to it than that.
exactly what is was thinking. Its not like they are bringing in something totally new to put online. There has to be more to it. And i think 2k knows we want legends online so they know the balance/fairness issue would not sit well

HMMM maybe. I wonder if there will be a virgingaming.com tournament again this year. I think 2k sponsored it last year. So maybe they didnt want some players who have unlocked the teams to be able to use them while others couldnt. Speculation on my end also but i dont think this is the case.
On second thought, there would be an easy fix to this. Make a separate lobby where you can choose all teams that is separate from the virgin gaming lobby, so yea this definitely does is not the case
I am not really an online gamer but I have played against my brother and a friend of mine online and few relatives too. I absolutely hated playing as current teams only on 2k11 since I am not a big fan of today's NBA. I was looking forward to finally being able to use classic teams online since my brother hardly comes over, and the other family members I have played with live in Mexico, and my other friend lives too far. Playing the computer only gets boring, win or lose. not sure why 2k is now having this greatest team ever debate commercial if classic teams cannot be played online.
I'm thinking that 2k will save this feature for future installments and try to use that as a selling point and by then who knows, maybe Barkley and Miller would have also agreed to be in the game.
They need to save things for next year and the year after that and so on. Whatever I'm sure they will explain their logic, which may or may not go well with those of us whom are disappointed with the exclusion of classic teams online.
Everyone in essence is an "off-line" player. So...you'd only be screwing yourself over...
Not only that, but they'd be ignoring a large portion of thier sales if they neglected offline. Sure, maybe 45,000 get online every day, so we can safely assume (or not, but for the sake of discussion let's do that) that's the amount of people that have Xbox Live Gold that play this game.
They'd be ignoring or shafting the other 4.55 million of their other customers. No company would even think of shafting the majority of thier fans (Unless said company is EA...but that's for another thread/discussion) like that. It's simply not feasible. I can understand how you can be upset, but in this way EVERYONE at least has acess to the legend teams (Expect for those that didn't pre-order to get the other 2 teams). You just can't use them online...
um i think he was being a lil sarcastic when he said screw offline players
This has got to be something about their capacity for what can be held on their servers or something. It just doesn't make sense otherwise. Their is a huge empathizes in every other game that comes out on its online features... you poor this money into legends and then not have that part of online? Online is possibly 50% of their consumers time spent using their product.
I'm thinking they might be able to be used in an online association? If we're unable to play with them, its not a deal breaker...to some it is....not judging anyone, just saying.
Thanks for the heads up about this! I upgraded to 2k11 primarily because of the new Legend teams & because of Jordan. In ranked team up games we got to at least play with some of the Legend teams online in 2k11. I thought for sure with all the time and effort 2k put into all of the Legend teams for 2k12 that for sure they would let us use them online this year even more. What a huge disappointment! The game looks great with all the improvements to the overall gameplay, but it looks like they have dropped the ball on the online play again. I'm gonna cancel my pre-order of the game & wait till next year.
Yeah seems like avoiding the question until release is the strategy here. We have to remember that although 2K is not EA, they are still a business. Keeping hush on this until release to avoid killing any potential customers.....This could have easily been addressed/explained via Ronnie2K's twitter posts. I haven't asked him directly on twitter yet, because he's giving the automated "wait and see response". Maybe we should all go to twitter and ask him so that it puts on pressure to answer or at least airs out the issue to other fans who may have not heard it yet.
