NHL 12 News Post

Gurn Sumal, Game Modes Producer at EA Canada, has released a blog detailing some additions to Be A GM Mode in NHL 12.

Quote:
So along with all the sim engine updates and Retired Jersey’s we have made tweaks to the other systems in Be a GM mode like trading. The trading engine has been reworked so that there is bigger difference between star players and your average NHL player in terms trade value. You’ll also notice the CPU proposing trades that make a lot more hockey sense for both teams (a lot more player for a pick or player and a pick for a player trades). We also added excess trade offer logic that quite simply says if I give the CPU a trade that is too good to be true, it won’t care about its trade block ie. Sidney Crosby for Shawn Horcoff (a really extreme example). This added logic will help with some of the frustrations from last year.

A little disappointing to say the least.

Some good things in there, but overall I can't say that I'm that impressed. Looks likes it's going to be more of the same for another year at this point in BAGM.

And they said they spent a lot of time on this mode!? Really???

I hope this isn't it. I don't think this is, but who knows.

I like the changes/tweaks they listed in the blog, but I am/was expecting a lot more.

No custom season length !! Major disappointment... I DON'T WANT TO SIM GAMES !

That is it? Man, I'm very disappointed. Looks like I will be sticking with NHL 11.

The thing is I don't think this is all of it. Either that or I'm in denial.

But my reason for thinking this is on Wednesday when the Community Day guys thought they could post their Be A GM impressions, they said they had to confirm with EA so they don't accidentally leak "everything".

I get the feeling there's still more, but only EA and the CD guys would know if that's the case. I tried asking the EA NHL Twitter account if this blog is all of the improvements, but who knows if I'll get an answer.

Dang, finally. I'm about to read it.

I was hoping to see that they improved the Free Agency part and the scheduling issues

I thought it was pretty good news. Of course there are things I would still like to see. The one thing I wish they would have mentioned along with the jersey numbers is that captains retain their captaincies. In NHL 11 and previous years when captain became a restricted or unrestricted free agent he lost his "C". If the team re-signed him he was still stripped of his "C". And the CPU has a very strange way of choosing new captains. Sean Avery was the captain for the Rangers in my Be A GM last year.

Oh, dang. I forgot about that one. I made mention of it before but that needs some attention severely.

While I was hoping for more from BAGM, if the sim engine is what it's cracked up to be, I'll probably buy the game anyways. Really the sim engine has been my biggest complaint and IMO biggest GM ruiner.

Very disappointing (really? Retired jersey #s is a new feature?), but as long as the sim logic is much better as advertised, then it'll at least, hopefully, be playable for multiple seasons.

I have a feeling that more was done but just wasn't said. There is no way that can be all. I mean they said they had some big feature and if that is the sim game tracker thing than that is pretty pathetic. I sim games just like most people do, but seriously, we all buy the game to actually play it. I was thinking they would add something to spice up trades, free agency, or something that actually has to do with being a GM. Simming does not count as being a GM unless you love to watch an action tracker for 82 games. I do agree the simming engine was totally broke. It totally needed to be redone, and it sounds like it has been. The thing is, simming should be tuned every year instead of all of a sudden coming out with it as a feature.

God I hope there is more. I was waiting for them to announce something huge today, but their announcement has been a little bit of a let down. I will say that often times it seems like the community day people offer more info than the actual game developers do. Hopefully they will be able to add a few things to the list.

On another note I would have just been happy if they would have cleaned up all of the problems with NHL 11's BaGM. I have a feeling that maybe they did, they just didn't include it because it wasn't something new to the mode. They could have just been talking about only the new additions, and not all of the things that were done to the mode. At least I hope that's the case.

Don't worry, I'm pretty sure EA would not release everything they have done to be a gm in one blog. I'm guessing their is a few more tweaks/additions to learn about which will be released in the coming weeks.

I gotta say, I'm hoping so Flames.

I mean...it's great that the sim engine seems much improved, more realistic number of injuries, better trade logic, etc.. But dang, if this and the Stat tracker is about it for the GM mode....yep, that's kinda disappointing.

I won't hold my breath, but hopefully GM blog #2 is coming soon!

Yep...that's a drag TD.

I must admit, I'd rather have had a custom season length, than the Stat tracker.

Even I would want custom season length over stat tracker and I would never even think to play a season that isn't a full 82 games. The thing that kills me about the stat tracker is that only a select amount of people will actually use it to it's full purpose. Not everyone sims a bunch of games during their season. I do understand that people want to be able to have some sort of control over the simmed game because they don't have the time to play a full game. I just know that when I sim a game, it's for the purpose of moving through my season faster and I do it through the calendar instead of going to each individual game and using the simulator that is built in now.

As I've said before I don't think most of us play this game as a simulator like Eastside Hockey Manager. This is ultimately a video game, where using the controller to skate, shoot, pass, and score occurs. That's just what's kind of ticking me off right now. I just don't believe so much time needed to be spent on this Game Track simulator when it could have been spent on so many more important parts to the mode. The simming needed reworking, but it did not need to go into this whole different game tracker system. This is the type of thing that needs to be added when the game mode is nearly perfected. I will say this addition will be great for people who sim most of their games, so they should be pretty happy.

The sim engine couldn't have been re-done without the Action Tracker, so maybe there could have been custom season lengths, but we'd still be stuck with the same broke *** sim engine from years past. I don't think anyone who plays Be A GM would want that.

Also to your last point, this doesn't just cover simming user games, it covers the entire landscape of your GM mode and the results that are churned out when it comes to player stats and team records. Even if you played all 82 of your games, this still covers your GM mode too because it's simulating what's going on with the CPU teams.

I'd much rather have this to be honest. Not to downplay the people who want custom season lengths, and it would have been nice to have both of these things, but IMO this was a more important thing to do this year.

I must have totally misreadthe entire blog then. I was just thinking it was a tracker for each individual game. Like the one they have now where you can see the score after each period and with 5 minutes left in the 3rd period. I just kind of thought this action tracker was replacing it and not having anything else to do with the mode. Thanks for clearing that up. I think what happened was I was a little dissappointed that this was the new feature for the game and I just didn't pay enough attention to what I was reading.
