2K Sports have just posted MLB 2K11 Developer Diary #4, going over the revamped fielding system, animations, fielding sliders and more.

Quote:
"I’m an avid gamer and the most important part of any sports game is player differentiation. I expect a 75 rated player to feel different than an 85 and so on. This is always difficult to accomplish because, traditionally in sports games, there are so many ratings and trying to make each attribute affect a player’s performance can be very challenging. In MLB 2K11, our fielders are differentiated by three skills:

1) Range – broken down to range and anticipation
2) Glove
3) Arm – broken down to strength and accuracy

By simplifying things, it allows us to introduce new elements of gameplay and, more importantly, differentiate the players. With that said, let’s get right to it and introduce the new features."

Now those vids are the kind of footage 2K should be showing us instead of that dreadful half azzed vid Ronnie was crowing about. Love they've brought back the throw speed slider too

Looks great so far. But, can someone explain why the second base umpire is running towards the infield in the Betancourt grounder as if to impede with the throw to first? Aren't 2nd base umpires supposed to stay in short center unless there is a play to be judged at the bag?

My goodness, the fielding looks incredible this year. I've always been a guy who loves to pitch and field more than anything in a baseball game, and 2k nailed it! This is looking like a definite purchase this year. This is gonna be the first baseball game where you are going to be forced to use defensive substitutions in the latter innings. Job well done

Loved everything I read in there. Very happy they added error sliders, those were something I really wanted because if it's over/under done, we can tune it. Also happy about the other sliders they added. I can't wait to try this out.

LOVE THIS DD! I love they are showing examples of how they fixed things this year. Great job so far 2k. Now let's get that mo out so we can see for ourselves.

Video Looking Good.

I'm thinking about picking this game up this year, and this video is making that look like a good decision.

love the context and position specific animations along with all the ratings and sliders to differentiate things further, if needed. It all sounds good.

To me though, the most exciting thing I read was that height and weight will influence animations as well as the ratings. This should better ensure things look and play out much more realistically.

Seriously the best dev diary I've ever read by 2K. I am very impressed with the amount of depth and variety they are putting into their fielding.

A month ago i had no question in my mind that i wasnt going to touch this game. Now its not such an easy decision. If 2k keeps releasing videos like this, I may be swayed into buying this year. Its still not a buy for me yet, but im slowly being pushed off the fence.

By far, that DD was the most impressive to date. That Jonathan Rivera is going to be in charge of the franchise some day...he sounds like he has some good ideas and implemented some nice features.

Fingers crossed that the sliders work correctly as described. 2K games are notorious for sliders that either do nothing, do not work correctly or work backwards.

Looks like I'll have to import this for my ps3. Would rather get on 360 but this game is NEVER released in Australia. Thank god for region free PS3 games!

Yeah baby! That is the most helpful diary yet. I love the video to support the explanations of changes. Some excellent tweaks and changes. A real dose of realism here. I am looking forward to this sooooooo much!

Dude! Its out worldwide this year! I've got it preordered and I'm in New Zealand (Not Christchurch, thankfully).

That's the type of media blitz I'm talking about! The fielding aspect of the game looks EXTREMELY fun, reminds me of the great days of MVP 05 fun-factor wise. The pitching and fielding look like they will be quite exceptional this year, and hopefully the batting gets to that point (via great ball physics and hit variety).

Cheers mate thanks for that info. Just checked some local site and looks like we get it on the 18th March, better late than never I suppose!

I was MLB the Show through and through but the more I see this game move, the more I am impressed with the animations and the dynamics. The graphics are on a lower level than The Show but I can see past that for better gameplay. This game just LOOKS FUN. Been banging out The Show Demo and loved it at first, but been bangin out game after game and even though I love the graphics and presentation...the enjoyment factor is waning

I did like the Garrett Jones vs. Ichiro pop fly comparison video, but I wonder how a line drive to the outfield would look. In other words, would the circle still be large for Garrett Jones? Or would it decrease in size because its comming at him quickly? Either way, 2k stepped up their game this year.

The other part of throwing, that we addressed based on your feedback from previous MLB 2K editions of the game, is that players threw too hard and that there wasn’t as much player differentiation as in real life when it comes to arm strength. We devoted a lot of attention towards making sure there is significant variation between the hardest and softest throwers so that, once again, the user is able to tell the difference when they see the fielder throw in-game.

Another throwing improvement that you’ll find in MLB 2K11 is that throws sometimes are one or two hopped to their target. It always bothered me that fielders were able to backhand a ball from deep short, turn around and throw to first base on a rope while fading away into left field. This year, you’ll see those throws one or two hopped to first base and, sometimes, lead to an infield single. Just like in real life, it’s sometimes better to take your time, set your feet, and make a stronger throw.
Man, that sounds good.

Hm man, that looks really good!

Might be picking up two baseball games this year! 2k is bringing it!
