MLB 11 The Show News Post

Playstation.Blog has posted some more MLB 11 The Show co-op mode details. Unfortunately, we can't use this mode in season or franchise mode.

"For those of you that follow us closely, you know that we spend a lot of time reading feedback from all of our fans out there. One of the features that many of you have been pushing for is the desire to play The Show with someone as a teammate, instead of just as an opponent. So, this year we created a co-op mode that gives you and a buddy the ability to play on the same team against the CPU, against 1 player, or against 2 other players.

Here’s how it works…you’re able to customize who will be responsible for the different offensive and defensive areas of the game. When you’re at bat, you can choose to allow one person to do all of the batting or choose to alternate batters. The base running works in the opposite way so if you’re batting, your teammate will be responsible for the base running allowing you to work together for sacrifices and hit and runs. I promise you, if you’re playing a 2v2 co-op offline, you’ll start to develop hand signals with your teammate for these situations. I know, that sounds ridiculous, but it’s going to happen.

When you’re in the field, there are four different controllable areas—pitcher, catcher, infield, and outfield. Again, you have the ability to customize who is responsible for different areas. The pitcher, like the batter, can alternate between the teammates (per inning)."

Either this is during the day or the lighting on the demo REALLY sucks... I still can't figure out hitting yet

The pic is a day game and the demo is a night game.

I love the new co-op!

My one complaint is it's too hard to tell who's doing what at any given time. The Player Control Icon only shows up briefly and is hard to understand at a glance. A simple controller rumble when it's your turn to bat or pitch might help alleviate this.

If you choose to alternate batting how could it be hard to tell whos batting?

Nice! This might be the way I can get my brother to actually play with me. Unfortunately, he hates baseball.

Actually, analog hitting is literally teaching me plate discipline in a way the old controls never did. Too bad I suck at batting in general.

I hate analog fielding though. I probably won't flip that on till the summer.

It's only been a problem for me on the first batter of the inning, and the first pitch of the inning. We sometimes have had to ask eachother who's doing what at the beginning of each inning. It can be difficult to remember who made the last out as the batter the previous inning, and who pitched the last inning. Especially in a co-op environment where there might be other distractions.

can't wait finally going to be able to team-up with my former real life baseball through the stages friends as well as those I met online who had great competition as well as new-comers which I can share hitting knowledge to make more good ball-players

I frequent this board once and a while and have never felt compelled to login or post before.

But after reading that MLB 11 was gonna have co-op I admit to being excited about a videogame release for the first time in a long while. Imagine how disappointed I was to find out that I could only play 2 player co-op online and pointless exhibitions vs. the computer. After thinking for at least a month that I could finally do a two player franchise you can't imagine how much of a buzzkill this was.

So my question is (if I could pose them to SCEA) Why has it taken you so long to implement a feature that was standard in the abominable ASB franchise back in 2001? Or in MVP NCAA '06? Another question might be why is it so difficult to transfer to franchise when you figured out how to implement it in exhibition? I mean it's like they didn't even try and are simply saving features to add for next year because they have been mailing in the same product for the last several versions and need to slowly unveil features to warrant the purchase of what otherwise is essentially a roster update.

Now back to Steve and the OS writers/employees. Why do you guys not ask any type of question like that to them while at that event where you got you initial impressions? Are you afraid that they would revoke your privileges for next year if you actually challenged them with a question? What's the point of being a member of the press if you're just going to be a shill?

Even if some of that is unfair you can't deny that some of those points are legit; especially the fact that it's taken Sony forever to implement a feature that was in an Acclaim game for crying out loud.
The question about franchise/season co-op was raised at the Community Event and EnigmaNemesis posted about:

I looked on the page you linked us to but didn't see anything. Do you have a post number so I don't have to go through 50+ pages?

Are you talking about a two player franchise as this quote states or a 2 player co-op franchise (you and someone else playing on the same team)?

Were you guys born yesterday? That is the standard reply all companies give when they don't want to give a real answer.
