2K Sports just posted another NBA 2K11 Developer Insight. This one talks about the expanded playcall system.
Quote:
"All Teams Are Not Created Equal - Each team has a base playbook of at least thirty plays that reflect their coach's philosophy and style of play. The marquis teams also have additional plays available to them that they can run for additional flavor. We created individual sets for teams as well. What this means is that even though two coaches may use a floppy set, their personnel and style may dictate that their floppy set starts differently than that of another team that runs a floppy. Now even if teams run plays that have the same end goal, the look you get from team to team will differ based on how they run it and who they run it with.
If you consider that we have well over 1000 plays across all the current and the old school NBA teams, you will see that, as a User, you have a plethora of options to vary your offense."
I saw some questions about flipped plays so I will add a bit to that. In an effort to assist the plays in running quicker they introduced flipped plays for the user.
How it will work in 2k11 is dependent on the type of play. On plays where the play starts on the left or right side of the floor. Those play can be flipped by the user by simply changing the side of the floor you are on when you call the play.
For plays that begin in the middle of the floor where there is no clear indicator of which side the play begins on. The cpu will run it to the side where the most players are already in position.
It works out really well from my time with the game.
For the best play execution you want to call your plays before reaching half court if you can. However the plays are running so much smoother than 2k10 that on a few occasions you will see the cpu run one play and then run another right behind it if it wasn't successful.
CPU seem to be keenly aware of the shot clock and how long it takes certain plays to run. I have seldom seen in limited play time it choose an extended play when there was not enough time to complete it.
Most will be relieved to know that with the exception of the out of bounds plays ever single play from 2k10 and previous has been removed.
Thanks for clearing that up. Someone didn't understand the insight that way before about flipped plays.

This sounds awesome. I've only recently starting messing around with playcalling in 2k10, and I really love the different dimension it adds to the game. Can't wait to see a system thats even better!!
But something I didn't hear about: what about DEFENSIVE PLAYS? I want more options than just man to man, 2-3, 3-2 and 1-3-1... How about a matchup zone or Box and 1, or the 2-1-2 zone that Turkey has been running in the FIBA tourney?? And it would be awesome if AI players actually played the zone while reacting to the players that they are defending. What I mean by that is that Durant should not be allowed to get as open as Thabo Sefalosha.
Also, since I'm talking about defense, can we get a way to get better control of the way our players respond to pick and rolls? For example, when the defending big man comes up to double Stephen Curry on a pick and roll, it makes sense because of the threat of a deep shot. But I don't want my defenders taking the same approach when Ramon Sessions starts a pick and roll. It would be great if we ould actually be able to have sliders or something that can be set for each opposing player that would dictate what kind of pressure to put on the ball handler and the screener, and whether or not to fight through zones.

What other defenses should their be in the NBA besides those basic one. Because I don't know any team that plays a 2-1-2 in the NBA. they may play it in FIBA. But this game is called NBA 2k11 for a reason guys...lol
I wonder if Strong Size Zone Defense is added to the Defensive Plays. Probably not but hopefully, zone defenses are improved in terms of the defense's spacing, crisp def rotations and aggressiveness to close out defenders.

That said I was told you can assign any play to any team. From the in game screen I have changed plays but not in association.
Hey that's half the battle won right there bro...I'll take it...

I would've been happy with the 80 plays in the game - as long as all teams had access to them. If I am the minority with that stance, then ok.

No team in the NBA runs a pure zone defense. But that doesn't mean zones aren't a part of NBA defense, especially since they took out the Illegal Defense rule a few years ago. The point is, that just like in the NBA, I would like my defensive sets not to be limited to 4 simple plays. NBA defenses are much more complex. For example, I've been dying to try a Box and 1 zone against the OKC starting lineup, but in 2k10 that just wasn't possible.
You're right no one (that I saw) used a 2-1-2 zone in the NBA this past season. But you can bet your *** that if Turkey has any success with that zone if they play the USA in the FIBA, someone will give it a shot this upcoming season. Its called NBA 2k11 for a reason Holmes... lol

The Illegal Defense is still in. But they changed it. You get an illegal defense when you are standing more than 3 seconds in the paint with no defensive assignment.
The Defensive 3 second rule is much different from the old Illegal defense rule, because the rule change effectively made the zone available to NBA teams, which was not the case with the old rule. Regardless, that is not the point. I'm trying to argue that we need more options on D

As far as I know, in 2K10, we can assign any offensive plays (all plays) to any team, can't we? That's what I see and can do in PC version at least. Not sure in the consoles.
EDIT: I just tried it and saw that I can select from all the plays available (there are actually 117 plays if my manual count didn't miss).

Really ? Maybe it's just because I have seen the new ones but those old plays were just Terrible.
On a serious note after you see the videos pm me and let me know if you still feel the same. I am honestly looking forward to seeing if you feel the same way.

I don't know any teams in the NBA that run a Box and 1 defense. You should check out CHK8 everyone loves that game around here. No gimmick defenses have won the championship in the NBA.
And also while on the subject of zones. I don't think they will ever be totally effective in the NBA. I think its because of the 3 point line being farther then the FIBA and NCAA. With the 3 point line being so far. There is just too much area or zone for each player to cover. Back when J.J Redick was on Duke. I remember him being a huge zone buster. Because he had NBA plus range. He could consistently hit 3's from 30 feet. He would get in the game. Hit two long distance 3's..Timeout the other team lol

Co-sign. I am happy they have more than that but I was more concerned with 2k actually executing plays better more than anything. People moving with a sense of urgency, etc. Looking forward to video.
Haha we need approval once we have that we can post. If it was just up to us would have went live yesterday morning. LOL
They are on the west coast so not even in the office yet.

Any word yet Czar? Really interested in what you have to say about this. The play calling is something I loved in the other game. Hopefully 2k has it together with this installment.
did you only did this 1 video or are there other pre-release videos (possibly showing more of this feature or other features) ?
if so, do they have to be approved too ?
and finally, if so, have you already asked for their approvals ?
There is more than one. The content has to be approved for all of them. There was a set number but since I am still working my bum off to finish them of course they are not all approved.
So if they don't approve some of the content I only captured so much so that may take the number of shows I do down as I don't currently have the game in front of me to get more footage.
Its a hell of a lot of work and truthfully I can't wait to finish. To try and capture everything you need in a matter of days for a feature like this is daunting at best.

Both games have their advantages and disadvantages to their play calling system. I think 2k found a nice balance especially for a single year turnaround. But even though I am one of you I know its all talk until you can at least see it. So hopefully things go like they should and it gets put up.
When you make a video like that the last thing you want is delay because the expectations rise to a point where even an excellent product is received as MEH cause people had to wait and it wasn't worth that. So I am all for getting the dang thing up as soon as possible...LOL

If it has that Czarisode feel, I can't see a MEH attitude. But love the humility.
