Backbreaker News Post

To anyone who read my Backbreaker Review, you know I've royally trashed the game's quality in the past. But I've also tried to remain consistent with the game being a lasting lesson to sports game developers that there is a different approach than the 'God-angle' many of the games have gone with in the past few years.

To truly simulate a sport, the best way to do so is to get you closer to the action, Backbreaker did just that. However, the game couldn't get the basic tenets of football down, so while the effort was to be honored -- it was still a very bad game at the end of the day.

Until today.

Backbreaker's patch, announced today, looks to completely change the game from the bottom up. The improvements will almost certainly take Backbreaker from a completely atrocious game to at least a somewhat passable game and possibly beyond that. However, what I feel the patch really does is leave a lasting legacy in the minds of gamers on how a company should handle the position of being in the wrong.

Thx I stand corrected. Don't know the Motostorm situation on PS3 (but do know the Madden situation) - I didn't mean to imply it was impossible, but don't think it's practical from their standpoint given how the game has sold to date. A new demo would bring attention to Backbreaker post-patch, but I'm guessing it wouldn't be free. Seems like it'd be far better to leverage something like Youtube and their own site to highlight before/after changes in video

Agree the BB team is so refreshing.
Absolutely, people forget that Euphoria isn't like other engines, you don't program 100s of animations, you install 1 behaviour. So any minor change can have a massive effect and can be done in a short space of time

I don't think this patch will imediately help much in sales for this version. It does show the integrity to get people who have the game to buy a BB2 and others to at least try the game out and either pick it up used or keep it in mind when the next version comes out instead of discounting it entirely.

I was about to write this game off and either sell it or let it continue to collect dust so this goes a long way in my book.

I don't know why I have to state this, but if a post was handled by a moderator for any reason, don't quote it and keep the problem going.

Ive only played the demo and had mix feelings about the game. I think the main problem with the game is gamers having to adjust to its style. This is game is different from any football game ever put out so a lot of people won't like the game no matter how much the patch improves it. The patch looks like it will make Backbreaker a better football game, and for the people who already own the game thats great, but I don't know if it will improve the game enough to make it purchase worthy. Im curious to see what post patch impressions will be, because this patch has definitely sparked my interest

Same goes for me.

The demo put me off. I know the zoomed in camera angle was a part of the game but I can't stand it, especially as I enjoy offline co-op the most (impossible with such a zoomed in camera angle).

The fact that they're implementing such a big patch and liaising with consumers gives me plenty of hope that BB2 will be more appealing to the masses.

Football + physics + customisable camera angle = the next-gen football game that I expected years ago (and the main reason why I got a 360 back in '05).

To say a few hundred diehards is exaggerating the numbers. This game will definitely surprise you and other that doubt this patch will not truly increase sales.

It will and you heard it from me first. I will not go into details why, but in time you will see.

Crazy how some in here was so sure that this patch was going to be something so minimal , and pathetic, only to see the total opposite happened.

This engine is a whole other ball game. It is very friendly to work with, so stop with being so negative , because of how things have been handled in the past, and open up relaxes and enjoy the game.

Way way off. It's the total opposite as to who purchased this game. Only the true hardcore gamers purchased this game on the fact that we truly appreciated the foundation.

The casual gamers that you speak of not only ignored this game, but had no idea it existed.

THank you for this post, so many do not realize this, and assume this engine works like the others do, and that is so far from the truth.

This is a very easy engine to work with. The proof has smacked them right in the face with the patch, and they still have doubts. Amazing

Good thing you were patient , but I will say this game will increase in sales by a nice margin. Nothing astronomical , but nice decent increase.

In the end for those of us that enjoyed this game , and are truly happy with the patch details. Please do not let those that are so negative steel your joy.

There will always be haters, and people for some reason love to put a dark cloud over a situation. Let them say what they want , and just enjoy yourself and take your joy with you.

I for one bought the game after hearing about the patch. I put NCAA down until it is patched (I play only Dynasty mode) and was looking for something to play and I must say I like the game. It takes a lot of getting used to, but once you do, playing the game is fun, which should always be the bottom line when playing a game.

I went out and bought a new copy of the game so BB would get some money. That was my way of showing support because I feel like with this patch (in BB2) and some play by play commentary (steal the guys that did NFL2k5) and a couple more things... in addition to the mods making the NFL teams there would be no reason at all to play any other "pro" football game. Even if they made a BB2 with all the things I stated then never made a BB3, it would be in my opinion THE football game to own until the next generation of systems comes out.

BB2! BB2! BB2!

I buy used games when I want to "stick it" to a company. I do that with some of the sports titles produced by that "other" company...you know that 800lb gorilla that I'm not allowed to officially mention here. I do it because they don't get my money and that makes me feel GOOD.

I'm actually pretty stunned a lot of people are finally coming around and supporting this game now and quite surprised people are stating their intention to buy new.

We should all definitely keep supporting and spreading the word of mouth if one really enjoys the game. If nothing, by giving XYZ game some competition it'll force them into innovation and to push themselves just as hard as they did when 2K was around. And from there, maybe it'll encourage other gaming companies to try or jump back into the fold of football gaming. Competition breeds excellence. And with competition gamers AND game companies win because they're forced to push the envelope and to innovate or die.

There were many of us sitting on the sidelines waiting for BB impressions, and stayed away simply because of all the issues. But plenty of us are willing to give the game a shot if these all get addressed.

You just said he was way, way off, and then completely agreed with him.

Anyway, this patch has me interested, but I didn't see any mention of adding anything to season/franchise, so I doubt I'll revisit Backbreaker this year.

Just picked up a new copy today. This game deserves my money.
