"Michael Jordan might be retired, but he’s still the most powerful force in the basketball marketing world. He has proved that in the shoe business and now he’ll get his chance on a video game cover.
Jason Argent, vice president of marketing for 2K Sports, confirmed to CNBC.com that the Charlotte Bobcats owner will appear on the cover of NBA 2K11, which will hit stores on Oct. 5."
good news i guess.. my mind now turns to how he will be utilized? Will there be some true meat and potatoes to having him and others? street mode? other classic players? I guess its natural to take in this great news and begin to question.
this is definitely a big move
I personally hope this move leads to the game actually including about 10-12 classic teams.
or just a long list of classic players you can utilize.
I don't see how this is any great news. I never get excited about who's on the cover of any sports game, to be honest. I'm always concerned about what's "in" the disc.
And even though MJ is my fave player of all time, IN ANY SPORT, it's still a whatever deal.Who's on the cover doesn't have anything to do with the actual game.
Yeszirrr. I better see like every pair of J's in there now. I hope the Infrareds and Space Jams are in there. Just imagine the sales of this game............Oh my goodness, this is going to be off the charts.
Space Jams are the best bball shoes, hands down. The need to bring back the XI's

with that comes, classic jerseys (with the length/bagginess issue), classic courts, potentially classic arenas, nba rule changes?
I mean you can really go all out in a respectable fashion or you can have him as a FA where he just jumps into any game mode you want him.
I dont want to sound negative, but VC can barely get the current nba right in regards to the jerseys, and courts, how the heck can they do that for a 12 team vintage league, unless they just reintroduce the 70s,80s,90s,00s all star west east teams and have him there with it all taking place at one "classic" arena.
Hoping for some classic teams like NFL 2K5 had. The Decade all-stars aren't enough.
Now the best basketball series on the market has the best player of all time on the cover. Nice to see MJ getting a cover.
Unbelievable news... this is HUGE. I'd love if there were a way to quantify the amount of people that buy this game JUST to play as Jordan. As a life long Bulls fan it pained me to have to play with #99 in the Live series.... awesome stuff.
already putting MJ on the lakers as soon as i get the game i'll keep editing him and kobe's age and the Los Angeles lakers will have a never ending dynasty muwahwaha
They better have a lot more than just Jordan. In my opinion, 2K11s control really sucked, probably worse than any B-ball game I've ever played (and that's over 20 years worth).
I really hope they focus on more than just the packaging. I'm on the fence with 2K these days and if they want their money, they need to change their focus and deliver the goods, not just advertise that they're there.

I can see the commercial now. Jordan is at a press conference announcing he coming out of retirement. A reporter asks him, "Do you think you've still got the skills?" Jordan replies "Yeah, I still got it. And I've been practicing against the best". Then the screen behind him shows clips of the virtual Jordan, playing against Kobe, LeBron, D. Wade, Durant, and Melo. And then Jordan says "I'm a free agent, who want to sign me?"
Then they could announce, preorder 2K11 and get a Jordan Shoe code. Unlocking every pair of Jordans.

Not really. The reality of having Jordan on the cover pushes the game levels above any competition. This is speaking purely in terms of marketing. You have two mainstream games, Elite and 2K. One is boasting new game mechanics with no history but what was Live. The other has the popularity of 2K Basketball and then Jordan on the cover.
Think about the first trailer for NBA 2K11 and the hype it will create. Again, this is just from a marketing standpoint, but 2K Basketball is already proven. It's a solid game and consumers know that. I happened to enjoy the last two years of Live, but when you consider the games past struggles to compete with 2K, changing the name to Elite and claiming a new game engine is going to offer very little in comparison to MJ.
No doubt this will spurn many more sales considering that people will be looking at both basketball games and when they see MJ on the cover and information on the back of the box that he is playable..............poor Elite. Now let's hope that animations have that less robotic feel to match the greatness of MJ on the cover of the game.
