Madden 2010 News Post

According to Kotaku and Ian Cummings, 350,000 people played Madden NFL 10 online once, to never return to another Madden 10 online game again. That is a crazy number, don't you think?

Quote:
"An estimated 350,000 people played last year's Madden NFL 10 once online and never played it online again, series creative director Ian Cummings recently told Kotaku.

He and publisher EA are mum on online multiplayer details for this summer's Madden NFL 11, but that's a number the creators of one of gaming's biggest franchises clearly wants to reduce.

More than a third of a million people dare to go online with a game and never try it a second time? Something or somethings are scaring them away."

Wow, that's insane. Wonder what the reasoning was for only playing once...

# 2 Hova57 @ 04/26/10 05:19 PM
part of that could be that it being mandatory to play on slow speed. or there servers and lag

Screen pass spam. Never played again.

Fair play needs a comeback.

Either that or there needs to be a percentage statistic for things like "goes for it on forth down" so that people can search for users to play with based on the percentage they go for it on fourth down. Would just make it easier to find games with people that play fair when your friends on your friends list aren't on...

Also, I wonder if this counts people who just went online to get roster's and never played any games online (like me).

Agreed!

Personally, I really want Madden to make Offline Franchise better. It's been NOWHERE as good and entertaining as it was on last gen. The radio show, concessions and newspaper articles were brilliant. So much can be done with the technology PS3 and 360 have.

I know that all of the focus is on online gaming these days, but developers need to stop trying to shove it down everyone's throat. I don't really care about online gaming. Is it cool feature? Hell yeah! But is everyone into it? Not really. The failure of Offline Franchise Mode has been a main reason why I haven't purchased this game since '06. EA has made step in the right direction with "Gameflow", though.

Doesn't surprise me at all. I'm pretty sure you have to go online to get the Roster updates.

Unfortunately, I am one of the 350,000 Madden fans who did just that. It was very early in the piece and after having issues with LAG, I then came across some petulant kid who liked the taste of cheese. I countered, clawed back with a 24-21 lead and he disconnected. No reward for my hard work. I was done.

Another reason for not playing online as much as I perhaps should is simply not knowing anyone who plays online. If I did, and I think that will change with Madden 11 as a member here, I guess I'd be playing online a lot more.

I'd imagine online shooters have similar numbers...for most, the online environment is way too hardcore and cutthroat. so yes, focus on offline franchise PLEASE

better matchmaking would help, as well. they should implement offline singleplayer results and tendencies, as well as more esoteric things like whether or not you mess with sliders (the idea being that if you do, you more than likely play more "sim" than people who just play on default).

the hope would be that you would seamlessly and painlessly find people who play similarly to you, thereby offering a more user-friendly player experience. let the cheeser's play with each other, let the sim-heads play with each other.

more than likely though, they are going to go for COD style perks. If that's the case, I will log 0 minutes online.

I am pretty much right there with you! I play my cousins online and some buddies from high school, but probably only a total of 10 games. I mainly get rosters and rosters only. What I hated was the lag even playing my friends. Thats why local multiplayer, mainly offline franchise, was the life of the party with my friends and me.

That's a good point re: online rosters. The figure may not be as high as originally being thought.

online franchise sucked, It had its problems but it was still fun
more lag
more glitchers
nano blitz, I played like 30 games online and only came across this a handful of times, it never consistent either
more lag
lack of control (applies offline as well)
more glitchers
and finally how about some lag that makes you badly miss a 20yd game
winning FG attempt!!!!
If lag was really that bad for you, I suggest ditching the 56K Modem. Quite Frankly its time to move on to Cable, it costs a little bit extra but its worth it.

While I agree with what you say about about fair play, I don't think that's it. People have been "cheesing" since the very first Madden went online (think it was 2004 but my memory could have failed me) so it isn't like it is a new phenomena.

Everyone has their own opinion of why this might be. My opinion is that 10 just wasn't that great of a game and we may be seeing people finally tiring of the same ol (basically) after 20yrs.

I'm definitely one of them. I got online and got pushed with that AFL bullcrap, had to download all of that just to get online lol... played my brother in law and the game kept crapping out on us, my first lost sadly. So we tried again and it was just a lot of lag. Everything was delayed, not just on/off lagging. So M10 all together has begun to collect dust lol

# 18 btemp @ 04/26/10 06:01 PM
+1 for roster updates

And the lag makes it unplayable anyways.

It said played once so I doubt it. Besides, unless if you only went online to update rosters once, then it would count more than once.

Oh yeah, you can never stop the cheese but I would like options or at least on screen stats which would help me to choose people that play fair.

I don't think that it should be standard for ranked games like it was last gen but there should be an option for it imo (I just want a good number of good games online... could really care less about rankings).

(Oh and the very first Madden that went online was 2003).
