MLB 2K10 News Post

2K Sports has posted two more Major League Baseball 2K10 Developer Insights today. Here is Part I, which includes gameplay video.

Quote:
"My name is Sean Bailey and I am a gameplay designer on Major League Baseball® 2K10. I want to share with you a quote straight from the white board in my office. Hall of Fame pitcher Warren Spahn once said, “Hitting is timing. Pitching is upsetting timing.” After winning more games than any left-handed pitcher in baseball history, Mr. Spahn is as well versed as anyone when it comes to the battle at the plate between a pitcher and a hitter. In Major League Baseball® 2K10, we have provided an experience where the gamer will really feel the benefits and challenges of upsetting timing, as Warren Spahn so eloquently put it decades ago."

Part II is right here.

Quote:
"Now, I know what you are thinking… if this is so realistic, then why have I read from recent previews that there might not be a check swing in Major League Baseball® 2K10? Before we get into check-swing talk, let me clarify that the check-swing is in fact part of an upcoming patch. Pulling back on the right stick will play a check swing if you previously committed to a power swing or contact swing. Flicking up to contact swing and then pulling down will stop the contact swing. A power swing is performed by pulling down and then flicking up, as mentioned above. However, if you pull the right stick down back towards you after starting a power swing, that too will result in a check swing. This implementation of check-swinging makes it impossible to do one by accident. Pulling down on right stick = check swing. Never again will you have to ask “Why the heck did he check swing?!?!?” before contemplating launching a controller across the room. It also makes it easier to trigger when you actually want a check swing to play."

So they heard the outcry and are patching it in. Good news.

It may be via patch, but at least they listened to the community and are fixing their error.
It is great that they are going to fix it. What is frightening to me is they actually planned on doing with out it in the first place.

That's good news. Now here's to hoping that they will do it in "pull-back" form with the analog stick, and not triggered by... well... the trigger (like it has in years past).

By the way, I don't know if most people would consider it a small gripe or whatever but for me it's huge... numbers are way over-sized. I know we saw this in earlier screenshots, but just to see it with this pitcher's view is just terrible. I don't know what it takes to shrink them, but that's gotta happen next year if possible.

And then a Giants nitpick: unless Pablo changed his stance during the off-season, it already looks pretty far off. Thank goodness for stance editing.

EDIT: Damn, this is one epic insight! Makes me kind of

With regards to the pitching in a two player game, I would assume the highlighted pitch would not show up on screen showing how to perform the pitch correct? I guess you would just have to remember the motions?

Good read. Gotta tip my hat to 2K for listening to the community and adding check swings back in.

Overall, I'm quite optimistic at this point. Sounds like it's going to be a good game this year.

Yea, the number on the back of the Phillies' jersey is huge.
Yeah, I mentioned that in another thread. The numbers are too big and it would be nice to have authentic lettering on the jerseys.

Oh haha, guess I only read the bold.

Are the Phillies numbers on the jerseys really that big? Kinda nitpicking a bit LOL.

No they're not.

Sounds very impressive. Can't wait to see the video. Props for adding check swings!

^ I think the entire lettering on the game's jersey is huge. It's definitely much bigger than what you provided.

Anyway, after reading this insight, I'm really glad with what strides VC is going towards this year. It really shows that they spent a lot of time during this development cycle in making this game, and I can gladly say that I'm excited to play two games this year, and perhaps win $1,000,000 out of it.

However, I'm still curious about their decision for the camera position. Not the angle, just the position. They said that it helps out with determining balls and strikes, but I'm just wondering about all of that nothingness past the batter's feet. Rest assured, I'll be changing the camera angle to get rid of that as soon as I get it.

A lot of good stuff here. The images are very nice.

I'm always concerned when 2K ties everything they do into ratings as they aren't the greatest when it comes to ratings. I did enjoy reading that Insight. It really seems like they put a lot of work in re-vamping Pitching & Hitting this year. Not to mention the visuals on the screen. This just looks soooooo much better than what we've seen in the past

Thankfully they look a bit better on some other jerseys (see the Hanley Ramirez shot), but this is a case of unnecessary enlargement (that's what she said).

Hopefully next year they can focus on getting the number size and and font.
