MLB 10 News Post

DAY 2

First thing we did was play a FULL game when I arrived today. Russell would choose the Minnesota Twins and I chose the St. Louis Cardinals (No Holliday). After playing him yesterday for 5 innings and only seeing a run between us I knew we were going to be in for another pitcher's duel. Starting Pitcher Brad Penny (Cards) and his opposing pitcher(Slowery? - Not sure if it was him or Baker) would battle it out for 7 innings. In the 4th(thereabouts), Slowery would give up a lone solo HR to Bengie Molina. Molina got ahead in the count and hit a knee high curveball into the LF bleachers. This would be all the Cards would need. The Twins had a couple opportunities in the game but their biggest came in the bottom of the 7th when Span would lead off with a base hit. Mauer would come up and drive one DEEP to LF-CF to the track but it would be hauled in by Rasmus who had to run a long way and Span was caught by a hair as he was almost to third base. Penny was on top of his game with 8 K's. Penny's curveball was hitting the low strike zone early in the game but was falling out of the zone later and Russell wasn't able to lay off. Penny also threw inside fastballs for K's on a few occasions that locked the Twinkies out. The Twins next opportunity to score would be when Penny was taken out of the game. Ryan Franklin would be pulled with a runner on 1st and no outs in the 9th. Motte came in and slammed the door. The Cards other run came on a bases loaded 3-1 pitch by Pat Neshak (I swung too). Neshak was MASTERFUL. I couldn't figure out the submariner who was just plain hard for me to pick up the ball out of his hand. I believe Russell had 10 hits to my 8.

An outstanding game and Russell was a First Class Act taking the loss. I wouldn't have expected it any other way!

OBSERVATIONS:

There is no quick pitching!!! The pitcher cannot hit a button to speed up ONLY the batter!

Saw 2 fans at the same time down the RF line reaching over the wall near the ground trying to scoop foul ball.

PITCHING

The meter looks the same but somehow just feels better. It does seem to penalize you worse the more you miss the meter. But the good part about it is when you do hit the meter you are hitting your spot, near or very near where you wanted the ball to end up. When hitting pause you can observe each pitch and it will tell you near or very near or not.

Fireworks display after hometown HR are only if the team actually does it in real life (i.e. there wouldn't be any for the New York Yankees.

GRAPHICS

Now that I've seen the game again I conclude that they are close in comparison to last year's graphics. I'm used to ONLINE which isn't nearly as good as OFFLINE graphics. However, this isn't a bad thing as far as I'm concerned. It's still more immersive to me this year due to the LIGHTING. It's easier to see the ball too. The animations are so smooth and there are many many new ones. I think the game is drop dead gorgeous.

BROADCAST VIEW

This is for you to decide. You may or may not like it. Your choice. There were a couple times where we should of made plays on balls but for the most part its not too difficult and after some more practice maybe we both would of made those plays.

There were new stat overlays that I hadn't seen before. I really couldn't tell you what any one of them were because for the most part we sped through those. I do recall one about about average mph for both starting pitchers.

AUDIO

The last day of CES wasn't so busy and therefore we could hear it better this time as you'll see in the videos. The crowd is WAY more lively for the home team.

OTHER THINGS

The sign in MIN will be animated when the game is released. I know someone asked that question.

Saw the 3D version of the game and as Rman said it is pretty cool. Have no idea if it will play on current PS3 with firmware.

The video recorder I was using is 720P. Have no idea why the contrast was blooming in these videos. The color therefore isn't as good as my previously posted videos.

Videos ( Keep checking back here as video links will be posted here. Some are lengthy so the videos probably won't show up for at least another 40 minutes)

In transitional lighting video #1, Shane Victorino took his hat off during the national anthem. That's good to see, last year players didn't take their hats off in that cutscene.

I'm also still dying to know this. Can someone please elaborate on this with a final yes or no...

Glad to see it wasn't animated but will be. This means maybe there is hope for the Neon Tomahawk at Turner Field to only be flashing during a rally when the Braves are batting(in another video it was flashing when the Mets were batting. Braves DO NOT use it when the defense makes a great play, or th pitcher gets out of a jam) Again the neon tomahawk only flashes when Braves are batting and have a rally going....so I was glad to see this about the Twins sign not working yet.

A little side note: there were no signs of field tear up in tropicana park, not even after the slide at home. I know it's an early built but I'm saying it because in 09 Dodger stadium didn't have field tear up and in some other CES videos (for example the one in Yankee stadium) it was there in all its glory so I'm just pointing it out so no stadium will miss out this year

Was I the only one that thought the HR Derby mode looked really dull ?

It just seemed really lackluster IMO especially the camera view on HR's and the fact that there's no commentary to go along with the action

Oh well

I'm a season and exhibition guy anyways and I know those games will be awesome to play with all the new features and improvements this year

Same here. It also would be a nice option to add before an exhibition game where you could determine the time of the year you play the game so you have some variable shadows/sun positioning.

If not I should just start a season for once
I've also never seen the ivy at wrigley brown...ah I'm missing out just playing exhibition games.

I agree! The no-commentary made it seem blah, like batting practice instead of an actually homerun derby. I also think that it would have been great if they would have put kids out in the outfield trying to catch the fly balls.

I did like the fact that not every pitch was right down the middle. Like the one that hit Howard in the foot, nice!!

As for the transitional lighting vids, I was also hoping that they would put some balls in play. You couldn't tell much from the player in the box, but maybe you would have seen some structures of the stadium creeping across.

Great vids though, you lucky *******!! Wondering if you were allowed to wondering around a franchise at all?

Was that the only camera view available in HR Derby? The camera view was along the ground? Strange

Thanks for all the vid post!

HR Derby: I wish the camera would show more than just the 'shadow' of the ball on the field. It's funny to watch a shadow of a ball, not knowing wehtere it will go out, and then see the HR went 442 feet! I think in MLB 06, (ps2) they had a varied/dynamic camera in the HR derby that would sow off the majesty of HRs.

Is the Broadcast Camera availble in HR Derby? Cheers! and thanks again!

game is looking good, hopefully correct schedules make it into this years version and we will not have to wait for a patch

Did anyone else catch Russell talking about how they retooled the hitting for the HOF and Legend difficulties? I'm pretty sure I heard him say that you would have to use the left stick to hit in those modes. I'm sure that won't be heavily debated here...lol.

I did not catch that, but that will be very interesting. You are supposed to use it from All-Star on up, but I usually do not 75% of the time, and receive very realistic hitting results.

I really wish they would at least mix in a "no doubter" every few HR's....that would add alot especially for the view point.

When the user goes to switch camera types, we can see that there's a "Home Run Celebration Camera" option that is disabled. Hopefully that means there's still a chance to view that majesty. I also hope there's an option to use the broadcast cam, since I noticed that he never switched to that option.

and let's pray that we can put in custom soundtracks in the background (like over the stadium PA with reverb) like batting practice mode last year.

Speaking of PA, I was never a fan of the PA announcer in this game. It sounds quite nothing like one with a personality that you hear in regular stadiums, nor does it really sound like it's coming over the PA in the same way. I always secretly wish they changed him out. I remember that MVP Baseball 2005 had a pretty good, riveting PA guy.

Was concerned about the fielding throwing meter from the earlier posts. Thank god it was a misunderstanding. I went from a high to a low back to a high lol
