NHL 2K10 News Post

2K Sports just posted another NHL Developer Insights. This one focusing on the fraphical improvements for NHL 2K10.

Quote:
"Hi all, my name is Heather Marshall, and I am the Art Director for NHL 2K10. I’ll be giving you a bit of insight on this year’s graphics. Our goal for the art team was to create an authentic, realistic NHL game. The first thing we did was take a hard look at 2K9 to see where we could make the most effective improvements. In the gaming industry, 2K Sports keeps the core art team comparatively small, which makes for a very dedicated and talented group. Though it was a bit overwhelming to see the task at hand, I knew we could pull it off. With our tablet pens in hand, I believe we’ve created the best looking hockey game this company has ever seen!"

To add to what Steve_OS said I have put up the whole insight in my blog plus added the screen shots from it in my Arena section for you all to go check out.

When do you think we will get videos!!!! These insights are good and this one especially that all the arenas are amazing, The player models are better still not great but good, and the refs are just fine.. But until I see this in motion what good are these insights. Everytime we got a blog or almost every time from Littman there was a video showcasing what the topic was... It was a great touch... But why aren't we getting videos showcasing the game and what it can do.... We are hearing that they are proud of 2k10 and how far they have come but at the end of the day, If it doesn't play so well what good is the graphics and presentation???

Good blog but what new information is there about the graphics that hasn't been already said? Nice to hear that playoff beards look a lot more real this time around. And yes, I second the suggestion for gameplay footage but I don't want to sound obnoxious.

And...as much as I think 2K hockey's arenas are the best in the business, something just hit me...the best HSBC Arena in any video game is actually *GASP* inaccurate!

The red walls that divide the 100 from the 200 level and "table seats" on the ends (not quite sure what to call them) are actually at a different height on the ends than on the sides. I'm willing to forgive them, though, because (1) it's a generic-named arena (can't get rights for the HSBC name) and (2) NHL 10 isn't doing any better.

Looking forward to the next Insight, hope some video's attached.

You are cracking me up man!!! How did I know you would be right up in this graphical thinG!!! LOL....

J/K Scott I like gettin you rowled up.. Player models do look good... Arenas look good. And to the person above saying Buffalos arena isn't correct, That may be but it's still better then a generic arena!!! Right

Like I said TIm, it may be inaccurate but it's the best version of HSBC Arena any video game has ever presented.

Where is the Stanley Cup banner at the Shark Tank? Oh, that's right. It's reserved for NHL 2K11.

Are we going to see intros for every game in franchise mode?

I have a feeling they will. I mean, they seem to really be pushing that improvement this year. There's no reason to not use it every game. And to stay pessimistic, that's a reason why they wouldn't! Ha!

I think the game looks great. Everyone rags on the models, goalie masks, whatever it is. I guess it does annoy me a bit, but I've never been one for some mostly minor disproportions to ruin my gaming experience. I mean, I love NFL 2k5 and one of the most glaring flaws in that game is the players running like they have something up their butts.

What I love the most is that each arena has it's own unique lighting. I believe I've said it before, but I think that's going to go a long way towards immersing you in the game. Playing in Philly will feel like playing in Philly. I might be just as excited for home game #41 as I am for home game #1. But I may actually dig going on the road a lot more; get a taste of the whole league.

I'll finish off this post with my favorite screenshot, the Detroit Red Wings intro. The glow around the stands gets me jacked up just looking at a still shot. It makes me recall the Orange Crush in Philly before some playoff games. Being up near the top and seeing all the people, wearing those orange shirts in unison... it gives me chills. Just awesome. It's part of what sports is all about. But anyway, the shot:

Your right it's much better than that game that STILL has generic arenas. How many years is that now? For shame.

"We had a great foundation for arenas in 2K9. What we needed was the authentic detail and feel of their true life counter parts. To do this, our Environment Lead James Lingo, along with John Lee and Ray Wong, focused on the unique qualities of each arena, with lighting playing a key role. From the warm hues in Pittsburgh’s Mellon Arena to the cool tones in Atlanta’s Philips Arena, finding the right atmosphere of each environment helped elevate their depth and reality. With great lighting, our characters also benefit, giving them the look of actually existing in that particular arena.

As for specific details, from the correct glass type, to the top board colors and even tunnels, all were completely remodeled, textured and lit. Another notable change is player entrances, which are now unique to each arena".

Unbelievable how much effort they put into the presentation/atmosphere. Every bit of info we get takes this game up another level. Now that's what I call attention to detail. Any game without top notch presentation is in a word "boring" IMHO.

OK, 2K, even though I'm gonna buy this on day one, I would still like to see some solid gameplay footage. They say they are working on that, but are they really, or was that a cloud of smoke that went up my bum? We appreciate the blogs, the pics, and all, but the gameplay vids will seal the deal, unless they are from IGN of course.

I watched a old preview video and they were showing 2 different game. I don't know if it was my eyes, The video quality, or what but I swore I saw different shades on the ice surface... Edmonton Ice and San Jose Ice.... can anyone confirm that? That would be a amazing touch

Arenas are nice, but for many people it's the gameplay that matters.

I agree. I really want to see gameplay videos too.

I'll see your gameplay videos and raise you an actual demo. Truly, seeing this game in action on our own consoles would be the best way to judge the graphics.
