Check out the first NBA Developer Insight, featuring NBA 2K10: Draft Combine.

"Erick Boenisch here, Lead Feature Designer for NBA 2K10. Some of you guys may know me around the various forums as SimBaller. I’m here today to talk to you about NBA 2K10: Draft Combine. By now, I hope you’ve read through the previews that have come out via TeamXbox, Gamespot, etc. If not, don’t worry, I’ll give you the scoop below. If you have read them, you’ll find plenty of new details below to tide you over until the game is released. Before I get started, special shout out to Derrick Rose who was announced as cover athlete for NBA 2K10 Draft Combine earlier this afternoon!

So, first things first, who wants to get their hands on core NBA 2K10 game play before anyone else? If you fall into that category, we’re giving you that opportunity. As announced earlier today, you will be able to get your hands on NBA 2K10: Draft Combine on August 26 on Xbox LIVE Arcade for the Xbox 360 and September 3 for the PlayStation Network.

What we’re doing here with NBA 2K10: Draft Combine is something that no other sports game has ever really attempted. We’re letting you begin your My Player career by creating your player and participating in the NBA Draft Combine at the Attack Athletics gym in Chicago, Illinois. Once you complete the Combine, upload your player to our servers in preparation for the launch of NBA 2K10. Then when you pop in the NBA 2K10 disc and plug in your Gamertag, your player is going to be waiting for you at the NBA Draft The only question at that point will be did you perform well enough to get drafted? That question will have to wait until October 6th when NBA 2K10 is released. In the meantime, let’s see what the Draft Combine is all about, and what you can do to get yourself drafted."

So exactly what is the point of uploading your player to the 2K10 server? Is it for the draft for others' games or what? That's what I'm trying to figure out what that's all about. I'm lost on that level. Also, which draft will it be for anyway? Is there going to be a draft going before we start the season? Didn't they do that in Live 07? I'm puzzled. I hope that Thursday opens up a lot of information.

With all the new adjustments(different types of players, more sig shot spots to change, etc.), I find that it would be hard to not have a complete gameplay version of 2K10 running on this.

I know it says you get the core gameplay of it, but what would be missing out of the gameplay? I would think that if someone buys this, albeit it only being 5 bucks, and doesn't like the gameplay, then that may sway someone whose on the shelf about this game to not buy it. I'm going to buy these both because this is only 5 bucks and I can't stand playing Live (I don't really get the fascination over Live, but I don't want to get into one of those), but I have been a 2K guy since the first one on Dreamcast came out.
Yeah, sounds like a pretty big risk if you ask me. What if people get tired of the gameplay before it comes out also? I thought this was being released maybe around the middle of sep.

Yeah, i'm wondering if there is some secret online mode 2k has planned. Maybe it's just to compare your career to others or something.

Uploading your player is simply how you continue your career when the full version of NBA 2K10 hits. There's a little more to it than just that, but we'll go into that much later.

Lol I think i'm actually looking forward to this demo game more than Madden.

Maybe that's just because I prefer basketball games over football though.

It's still disheartening to me that we've heard nothing about gameplay or seen any videos. I'm a tad impatient considering the competition has released yet another video today (check out Live board). I'm pretty impressed with what they've done.

We had a gameplay video much earlier because of E3 last year.

We also had a few 'teaser' trailers in mid-late July.

Up to now? Draft Combine. I know more is coming, I just think its ludicrous that we get caught in the middle of this crud; in the end, we're the consumers, and we pay the money.

If the game was coming out next week then I would see your point but they have more than two months and they're having these things every week until then.

I gotta agree, I am holding off on buying Madden for 2K10 and some other titles.

I love the blog idea, I'm just being impatient and a bit frustrated.
Seeing as most other games release info a long time before the game even comes out, but I'm used to it when it comes to 2k. It's a bit of a tease viewing Live's new videos and knowing what to expect from 2k but not being able to view it yet.

I don't need a reason to be convinced to buy this game, but I do want to see what kind of gameplay improvements are in store; and I don't think they have to do all kinds of marketing techniques in order to persuade avid 2k fans, let alone casuals.

Actually up until like the last two years, 2k hasn't been that great at marketing their game and the casuals buy Live. If they would have put some more time into doing the "free" advertising like blogs and releasing videos and such online, Live would be even deeper in a grave.

Yep we just don't have much to be excited about I mean info can only do so much trailers and gameplay videos is what gets people really excited most of the time.

Many casuals buy 2k as well because of word of mouth, a few of my friends only bought the game because I told them about it and they loved it.

You have no statistics to prove how many more casual fans buy Live over 2k; so I wouldn't spew out that sort of comment without fact or knowledge.

That's exactly how I feel to sum it up.

Live is showing their fans, "hey, you guys told us these things are problems, so let us give you a few videos showing you that we've addressed those problems".

2k could only do so much for their loyal fan base by showing a vid or two which highlight similar things or gameplay features; again, imho, no one here needs to be convinced to buy this game. I just don't think many people care for this wishy washy Draft Combine info, which seems like an excuse to 'hold us off for a while' and give them more time.

i know...it's just that a lot of people i know is so impressed with what live is doing and they're saying that it's over and i keep telling them that both games comes out at the same time 2k is just waiting until the time is right

# 39 LastEncore @ 08/12/09 12:37 AM
Well your character has to be on the server in order to use him in online team up modes. So by that knowledge they have to keep a constant update of him up there so I can see why you can only upload on at a time. I guess if your just doing the offline modes though you can create as many as you like. Maybe not though.

On a side note though I'm happy to hear how hard it will be to make a great player. Its going to take me awhile but I'm going to bump my way on up to kobe-level.

Do you have any statistics to prove me wrong?

Pretty sure Live advertises more than 2k does, it definitely shows when you walk into a store and see Live banners everywhere (they pay for that). Also when you turn on an NBA game, there is usually some Live commercials, 2k really didn't do that until a couple years ago.

I know I've converted a handful of friends who used to love Live, and they'd buy it because they though 2k sucked because they never saw commercials.
