NBA 2K10: Draft Combine News Post

IGN has posted their first look at NBA 2K10: Draft Combine.

Quote:
"The career of any NBA star begins when they're kids. Sitting out in the yard shooting hoops, pretending that the clock is ticking down on the NBA Finals and the ball is in their hands. From there, it's on to high school and, if they're lucky, a good Division-1 program where they'll earn the attention of pro scouts. Then the top 1% of those athletes makes the jump to the NBA Draft Combine with the hopes of impressing pro teams enough to make it into the two rounds of the draft. That's where 2K Sports' NBA 2K10: Draft Combine comes into play.

The downloadable game for Xbox Live and PlayStation Network is scheduled to release in early September and will allow players to sculpt their player with 2K Sports' new super-deep player creation mechanic, define their play style and then participate in six full-length games and six of a possible eight drills in the hopes of making it into the coveted first round of the NBA Draft."

You could edit/create draft classes last year, just couldn't share them.
One thing that they should have done last year is allow users to create a draft class that's part of the roster outside of association.

That way, whenever one starts their association, they don't have to edit the draft class every single time as it will already be in place. Plus the draft class can be shared as well.

Maybe this year...

I'm psyched about this, big madden superstar fan and I've been dying for the 2k series to have something like this, it looks awesome and I have no problem shelling out the extra few bucks to play this, looks great.

Okay, so lets say you get drafted by the Hornets..everytime you play will have different teammates? I am just not sure how actually playing the game will work.

I should get the PC Version so someone can patch his face out of the game and replace him with Hubie Brown or somebody.
DC's on fire! Great stuff, man.

What?

Have you ever played NCAA or Madden's "Superstar Mode"? This is what this mode is like.

Example/Run through.
-You create your player, pick his position, height, blah blah blah
-You get thrown into the combine to do drills and games
-You perform well and you get drafted high, you do bad and you get drafted low.
-Once you're on a team, you play with the team as your player.

It's like an Assocation mode, but you only have control over the player you created. So you're putting yourself, or your created player in the NBA and playing through him and only him.

So some players won't be on the same designated team? Ex. Luke Budinger or a late 2nd round pick; if you got picked his same pick, he would go to a different team?

So if I get drafted late in the 2nd round or go to a team that doesn't need me, I won't play? What if I actually have a good rating but don't start because I play behind a superstar, will I get traded? Will they trade the other guy because I'm cheaper?

I was wondering that too and I'm hoping that after you get drafted they have summer league where you get rated based off performance(like the picture of draft combine where it has different sections). Have training camp where you get to compete for minutes during practice and in preseason games.

Lets say you don't make the rotation I was thinking that in between games the team has practice days so you scrimmage with your teammates and you get graded on(same way with the draft combine). Your performance will determine how much you play.

I'd be extremely surprised if the career mode is that deep. I turned down my expectations a bit because this is the first year of this new mode (unless it's a renamed 24/7). I don't expect them to include that much detail in the one year or so they have to develop the game.

First of all let me say that this draft combine sounds like a great idea. I love all the customization that has been added to create-a-player. I will definitely be purchasing this. But the thing that concerns me is that you can only upload 1 player to the 2K servers to be used in 2K10? It seems like a waste of such a promising tool. You should be able to design entire draft classes and have them imported into your game. I'm sure people are gonna want to experiment and create players at different positions with different skill sets and import them to play with in the full version of the game. It just seems like we're being cheated out only being allowed 1 player to import. When I first heard about this module I thought we were gonna be able to spit out players and import them in 2K10 like there was no tomorrow.

No one has any idea if you can or can't do that yet.

In this screenshot, I noticed the jumper was "Buckets". Is that Steph Curry's sig shot?

I'm pretty sure you can create as many as you want, but can only put one player on your 2K account. Then you download that player into your roster on 2K. Maybe you can just make like 20 PS3/360 accounts though? Or maybe that's hard to do on 360 compared to PS3, notsure how Live works.

I'm pretty sure it's referring to the Globetrotter's Buckets.

I must admit, seeing all the different kinds of shots fills me with just...jubilation. Yeah, that's the word. I mean I've been sayin' for ages that they need different shots depending on what the shooter is doing. I just wonder if this means that there's a difference between set shots and off the dribble pullups.

Would be nice if 2K pulled an online association mode out...

I really don't understand though, if you are over the age of 17 you should've outgrown offline modes by now.

Offline modes take away from the actual sport and the spirit of competition. Offline modes also take away from the actual game. Developers could add more realistic gameplay if they took the kiddie stuff out of the game.

Online is where the competition is. Online is where your skills are truly tested.

The Game is basketball, Basketball is a sport, you play a sport against competition, competition is online....bottom line.

You want some sort of league play....join an online league..bottom line.

But for the kiddies this is an excellent mode. I am sure they will have fun with it.

Good Job 2K!
Like kcxiv said, what you find fun isn't what everyone finds fun. I'm an offline gamer because I think too many people ruin the online experience and turn it into an immature, alpha-male defense mechanism. Yes, this may be a bad stereotype for online gamers out there, but my online sports gaming experience has always centered around gamers who I'd never let play beside me on my own couch. Yes, I'm aware of the numerous gamers who don't exploit or cheese and I've played with them numerous times (most notably in Forza 2) but I enjoy offline gaming more since I find the AI gives me a much better experience than the gamers I play online. Is it "because I suck"? That's neither here nor there, honestly, and it's an immature and shallow response to begin with. I play offline because I prefer playing offline and because I think the online experience is a mixed bag, and I'm sure many gamers here on OS agree.

Now, as for 2K10's Draft Combine, I'm not that impressed...it's a trial download at this point until something really piques my interest.

This. Thanks for saving me some typing strokes.

*Sigh* I was hoping that all these inane newcomers would be confined to the Madden/NCAA forums, but I guess that would be too much to ask for. Outgrow Offline modes... Ridiculous
