NBA 2K10: Draft Combine News Post

IGN has posted their first look at NBA 2K10: Draft Combine.

Quote:
"The career of any NBA star begins when they're kids. Sitting out in the yard shooting hoops, pretending that the clock is ticking down on the NBA Finals and the ball is in their hands. From there, it's on to high school and, if they're lucky, a good Division-1 program where they'll earn the attention of pro scouts. Then the top 1% of those athletes makes the jump to the NBA Draft Combine with the hopes of impressing pro teams enough to make it into the two rounds of the draft. That's where 2K Sports' NBA 2K10: Draft Combine comes into play.

The downloadable game for Xbox Live and PlayStation Network is scheduled to release in early September and will allow players to sculpt their player with 2K Sports' new super-deep player creation mechanic, define their play style and then participate in six full-length games and six of a possible eight drills in the hopes of making it into the coveted first round of the NBA Draft."

You must not like the RTTS mode much huh? That mode changed the landscape of baseball video game modes and I really do think it rivals online mode as far as mlb '09 goes. Theres no reason why this mode cant do the same for 2k.

has anyone considered that the 39 overall might not be his attribute rating but that hes ranked as the 39th best player at the combine at that point?

just sayin, i think people get hung up on a number attached to a players name. if kobe plays exactly the same in 2k10 as he did in 2k9 but his overall says 79 instead of 99 there would be a 30 page thread arguing about it.

Agreed, if 2k pulls this off as well The Show did I will be very happy. Especially because it's being taken online. I think this is the future of sports gaming.

That would be overall ranking.

yes but the picture just says "ovr" and being projected at the very end of the draft that doesnt seem too far fetched.

This is what it is I'm pretty sure. It says he's completed 1/6 games. It says he has 1752 skill points in his balance. I'm pretty sure 39 OVR is his default rating or a very early rating and he has yet to increase his attributes with the skill points. Looks like he's just done the drills, got the skill points, but hasn't really boosted his attributes at all.

sorry, i didnt look at that pic, i stand corrected. the point i was really trying to make though was that people make too big of a deal over overall ratings, its just a number, just because a player is 99 doesnt mean they are perfect or because they are 73 or lower that they are scrubs and useless. either way im glad 2k has redone their rating system. hopefully the insider has actually done his job this offseason.

I think the concept is great. And I've been a huge advocate for having a Superstar Mode in an NBA game, so I'm really glad to hear we're going to end up with some variation of one.

What's not cool, is charging for something that could EASILY be put on the disc. I don't want to hear "It's so the fans can preview the game early!", because every year we get a demo and the demo serves that purpose fine. Negative points 2K. Nickle and "dimeing" your fans seems very EA'ish.

The big question is will it be like a superstar mode, Or an actual career mode for that matter? Will we be able to get things like endorsement deals, do certain objectives/actions off the court, and control our player and him only when playing a game?

It is on the disk. The only difference is that your player with have a special patch on his jersey if he goes through the 'demo' mode.

So yes, it is for the hardcore fans to preview the game early. Or at least the new big feature.

Or just a mini-game to spend time until the release of 2k10 itself.

My ? is, how does the My Player mode begin in the retail game? You can't create him and go straight into the draft, bc your rating would be too low. At the same time, how many people would just hold off if they knew for sure the combine is on the game disc if you wait a 2-4 weeks?

You can't sell DLC of stuff in a full version of a game.

Unless this has changed, I don't think there will be all of these mini-games and training and such within the full version. My guess is you go straight to creating your guy, giving him a certain amount of points and go from there.

I'm sure things like the 2k Insider, playing in pick-up games to build up your guy are exclusive to the DLC.

This is just my speculation, however. Please don't quote me and use it as reasoning why "2k is turning their back on their fans" or something similar.

Agreed, I think by purchasing the combine you will be getting "bonus points" to add to your player. What I want to do is since I plan on getting the DLC, I want to create a player with and without using the combine to see the amount of influence that the DLC has on My Career mode.

That's exactly how I see it. I mean, the content is going to be ready for launch in September. So it's not like it's a matter of "it won't be finished in time for the disk". I'll eat my words if this Combine Game ends up being playable on the disk, but it just doesn't sound like that's going to happen.

Well I think 5 bucks are a reasonable amount of money for a midsized DLC. Besides, as far as I can speak for Germany, EA Live is usually €69 whereas 2k's Versions you can always get for €55. You can do the math. So there is no need to insinuate 2k for nickel and dimeing. But correct me if it's any different overseas. Besides there are DLCs out there charging you ridiculous 3 bucks for a stupid costume you can use in a game.

You create one player - and you play with that one player throughout his career, hence "Career Mode" and "My Player".

You could edit/create draft classes last year, just couldn't share them.
