Madden 2010 News Post

IGN has posted their hands-on preview of Madden NFL 10.

Quote:
"Presentation, something that was seriously lacking in the first Madden iterations on current-gen systems, has seen a nice overhaul. Pre-game you'll notice camera angles that show concession stands handing hot dogs to fans and people making their way to their seats. During the action there will be detailed cutscenes (not the low-resolution models like in last year's game) showing players warming up on the sideline. If your quarterback is taking a licking on the field you'll see him trot over to the sideline and pick up a phone to talk to the coach's box. The chain gang is also present, as are all of the refs that should be on the field. And yes, you can truck into them.

Just don't run into them too hard or you might injure one of your star players. Do that, and you'll be greeted with a new injury mechanic. It won't happen immediately – depending on the severity of the injury your man might need to be helped off the field by other players – but once the problem is diagnosed you'll be shown a screen that tells you what's injured, how severe it is and then you'll be given the option to put him back in the game. You'll be given a rating that tells you how good he'll be once he's back on the field and you'll see the likelihood of him re-injuring himself. It's sort of like Blitz The League, but without the steroid use."

+1, Kirby's are badass vacuums.

Oh, and one small difference. Kirby doesn't ask you what features you want in the Kirby before they make it.

Yeah Kirby vacuums are the best.

My parents kirby is almost 25 years old and it still works to this day and cleans a lot better than any other vacuum.

lol, can't believe we are talking about vacuums in a madden forum.

I'll take "things that both suck" for $500, Alex.

Yep, I still can't believe I spent over a grand for a vacuum, but it is definitely a beast, plus the salesman was awesome. I've had mine almost 10 years.

Again; is no-one worried about frame-rate issues? If this can't run smoothly yet on the 360, I'm seriously worried for the PS3 version.

Why should we be worried, has the game gone gold? No.

Because EA couldn't even get Madden 08 to run at 60fps on the PS3. It ran at 30fps because of problems. Couple with this the fact that they've added a ton of stuff (refs etc..) and we're left with a serious problem that may not be fixed in time.

This would be ok if EA's track record were better when releasing games with poor frame-rates : They were happy to release every NCAA football game after NCAA 2005 on the Xbox with frame-rate issues.

So yeah. I'm worried as hell that Madden 10 is gonna be screwed on the PS3. Either that they'll chop it to 30fps or it'll struggle and sputter and they'll say "We can't see any problem. Try changing the camera angle to classic view"...Remember the summer of 2004?

There wasn't a problem last year, I don't see why there would be this year...

Because they've added 7 referees and a crap load of animated peripherals and accessories. So what probably was fine tuned to run on the PS3 last year will be a very different set of events this year. No-one worried that we've seen no gameplay vids with refs on the field running on either system yet?

Chilllll.

Most games have frame rate problems before they reach beta...

And yes, these authentic styles trickle down to the kickers as well.
Anyone mentioned this yet?
I think its cool but i dunno how many different kick styles there can be

# 172 Ozeob @ 05/17/09 09:16 PM
I have a problem with 'tv-style' presentation. I get the feeling after each play (at play calling screen) we're still going to see a camera positioned right next to the huddle, on the field, looking in on the players... what I'd rather see is a camera positioned in the stands (tv style), zoomed in, looking into the huddle.

Having refs is a cool thing, I'm just not sure about 7 though. I like the thought, I just don't see how you do that when we don't even have a fully recognizable highly detailed Head Coach stalking the sidelines at all times... and then they add more characters on the outside of the endzone, but no fully recognizable Head Coach at all times.

They do make some strange choices.

I guess that points back to the 'immersiveness' thing that was discussed some time back. It's all subjective to one's point of view. No one wants to see the graphics drop immensely of course (or at all for that matter). But I'm more immersed with a character that has a strong resemblance to the head coach and more characters around the field than less characters and one highly detailed coach.

Doesn't mean EA hasn't made strange choices at times or in the past. I just don't feel this is one of them.

hopefully devs are getting the hang of things on ps3 now that it's been around for a few years. i think we are starting to see the ps3 really exert it's power advantage over 360, it's just up to 3rd party devs to step up.

I agree. I wish the original Madden team had this vision for next gen.

You wouldn't give up one or two of those 7 refs for one recognizable Head Coach that doesn't look like a raisin head?

Granted, there are 7 refs in real life... I just don't see how we can go from 0 to 7 and still neglect the Head Coach which is actually far more visible. On Sunday's you don't see all the refs all the time, they're more incidental to the shot when you do see them. But the Head Coach is shown all game long, on purpose and therein lies the problem.

Perhaps "strange" may not be the best word, but that was better than the other one I was going to use... I just think you have to focus on things we're going to see all the time... Just seems like a no-brainer...

I think they still have some work to do on getting that philosophy nailed down. It's really not an immersiveness thing so much as it is a priority thing. I just totally disagree with how some things that aren't visible much are given higher priority than things that are visible all the time and are a huge part of what we see on Sunday's. That makes no sense to me.

The Refs are part of the field. You can run into them, use them as screens, etc.

The coach is on the sideline, out of the way. From the perspective that we play the game, you aren't going to see the coach in detail very often unless they were to specifically add in cutscenes or between play shots. A lot of the places where a TV broadcast would be showing the coach, in Madden we'll be in the playcalling screen.

(Although my team's coach sits up in a luxury box worrying about the Jedi and fast receivers, so my perspective might be a bit off....)

I just think that everybody is very confident when IGN made a statemant like this :

The team at Tiburon is well-aware of everything I'm talking about and I'm sure they'll smooth things out as much as possible before the launch date hits.
I've never seen a preview written with such doubts about the framerate at this stage in development. Add to this that this isn't even the PS3 version. Then add to this that we still haven't seen a video of the game being played. Then add to that the statement "As much as possible", and it soesn't sound like IGN are very confident about it being smooth on release.

They've added too much and something will give. I'd bet money on it.
