Madden 09 News Post

Have you played Madden NFL 09's Superstar Mode yet? If not, consider yourself one of the lucky ones that hasn't had to endure the pain just yet, at least according to Wil McCombs. McCombs examines the mode in his article, Madden Superstar Mode an Exercise in Awful.

Quote:
"Perhaps I’m both a sadist and a masochist. Is there really any other explanation?

Every year, I devote just a little bit of time to Madden’s Superstar mode. Not because I really think that I will enjoy it. No sir. I do it simply, because it is so brutal. But why, you ask, do I immerse myself in this agony, even for a moment? I have a two-part answer."

In Madden NFL 08, I tried out for QB, and at the end of all of my workouts, my overall rating at the QB position was a 12. A 12?! I had a higher rating at WR despite being QB drills (71, if you'll believe it).

However, I did like it in 06... for some reason, Madden is just too bad of a game when only controlling one player. Can we at least choose to control other players? Why do I even want to play QB if half of my plays consist of me handing it off and watching someone else control the RB into a tackle?

Like a lot in Madden, it's past its prime. Go back to Madden NFL 06 Superstar mode and I'll be happy.

Take Superstar mode out

Give us Tony Bruno show (or another radio personality) and 'Around the League' newspaper like past Maddens..

My .02

I love superstar mode. This is the first year it's working really really well.

I don't know what any of you are talking about.

Yeah Superstar mode needs to go, I thought it was horrible when they first put it in the game, and its still the same now. Ditch it and use that space for something useful.

I loved NCAA's campus legend! That is the way to do it! When I got exported to madden and drafted to a team, I've never felt less part of a team than this game. I play a WR. The ball is hardly ever thrown to me even if I'm wide open, and the first read. When I do get thrown to the DB usually jumps 10 yards before the balls destination and knocks it down...it's unrealistic and irritating...special on short 10 yard plays.

The only way to get the ball thrown your way more is to call for the ball all the time (which again is unrealistic), this throws off your timing and your speed, and more often than not makes you miss the pass if it was thrown to you.

It's so disappointing. In NCAA i loved becoming the star/leader of the team. In madden I feel like and outsider they let on the team to draw coverage so they can throw to other players. The games are obviously built on the same engine (if not they have a ton of the same weird animations), so how do you go from so great in NCAA to so terrible in madden. Doesn't matter what your speed is, the DB will stay with you, and will jump just as high as needed not even looking for the ball to knock it down (I was very impressed with NCAA making defenders not go for the ball if they aren't covering you).

Blocking is terrible. Every time I get close to someone they shed their block and tackle you. What is the point of a hole being created on a return, if the blockers just pop off of as soon as you run by? Not only do they pop off their blocker, but they match your speed instantly from behind (from a dead blocking stop), and chase you down and tackle you.

Check down to the HB/FB & they run backwards for 5 yard, or they simply run out of bounds with plenty of room to spare. What a disappointment

Big fat Kudos to NCAA for making strides in their game this year....i'll leave it at that.

Keep it PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!! But change everything!! And I mean everything. Make the combine more realistic and have it in the Colts stadium and have the player do real combine drills! that would make it so much better than what it is already. if they aren't going to touch it then take it out of the game!!!

I have a feeling superstar mode will stay for the most part unchanged (much like franchise has been since being on next-gen) in Madden 10' but maybe next year they will upgrade it. Since it wouldn't take away development time if its barely changed, I don't see why they would take it out.

I just really hope franchise is really revamped, like the dev team keeps saying it will.

I recently tried out the Superstar Mode and ran a 4.24 with my WR first try and then absolutely dominated the mini games. So I was feelin' pretty confident. My WR was a 91 OVR as a rookie, I was just drafted by a team (the Rams) and was about to start my first game. I thought to myself "Hey, this could actually be sort of fun.. hmm."

NOPE. Marc Bulger threw 7 interceptions in one game and by the time week 4 rolled around, he had already thrown 12. Not to mention my Pro Bowl HB Steven Jackson was averaging a whopping 0.9 YPC!!

Haha.. it was awful. CPU QBs throw an asburd amount of INTs and CPU HBs can't do ANYTHING on the ground..... horrible.

They REALLY need to get rid of this. I hate it and so do most people it seems like.

As someone who absolutely loves Road to the Show, and really likes NHL's Be a Pro, I love the concept of this type of thing.

HOWEVAH (Stephen A. Voice) Madden's Superstar mode was craptastic from the beginning, and they've really made no effort to improve.

If they are going to keep it, can you at least IMPROVE it a little bit?

Well I never really cared for superstar mode. I think they should take it out and use that space for more franchise stuff instead.

# 32 primetime24 @ 05/13/09 08:36 PM
i always play the mode and i have fun. i get pissed off at times but i still enjoy it. i know people dont like this mode but im tired of people who always say this mode is a waste a space, just take it out of the game, etc. i love this mode and wish it just gets improvements. like franchise mode is fun too but i play superstar mode first and wish they put as much effort into this mode as they do in franchise. and i know some others are with me too

If you're going to ask for Superstar to be removed, please first note that it will have ZERO effect on the rest of the game. I am so sick and tired of these redundant posts saying "use the disk space for something else" or "get rid of Superstar, and instead blow out presentation and franchise and give me the ****ing moon".

1) It does not take up a significant amount of disk space. It is a game mode. It is code. At the moment, there are few, if any, assets that are Superstar-specific. Stop saying "space", period.

2) They spend no time on it right now, and haven't for several years. By taking it out, they would actually spend EXTRA development time on it. You would lose features.

From now on, if you post that you want it removed from the game, I expect the following format: "I hate Superstar mode, take it out of the game, I am willing to lose [name of feature] in order for you to have the time to do this.

don't take it out...just revamp it. its way too broad

# 36 ComfortablyLomb @ 05/14/09 07:32 PM
Superstar Mode needs to be killed because it's a reminder of all that has been wrong with this series the past few years. Quietly remove it and never talk about it again.

some people play the mode. they just need to put some time on it. i read on another thread "ea answering questions" that its going to be improved.

I SERIOUSLY HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE SAY REMOVE IT. WHY DONT YOU GUYS JUST STFU AND WAIT TILL THE GAME COMES OUT CAUSE I KNOW ITS GONNA BE IMRPOVED SLIGHTLY. ESPECIALLY THE AI WILL BE BETTER.
