IGN has posted their hands-on preview of NBA 2K9.

Quote:
"On the court you'll notice tighter animations and an even greater sense of control. The breadth of moves has been expanded quite a bit with several new dunks and layups on display in our game between the Knicks and Celtics. There's now something called Reel Maker which compiles a short list of replays and cuts them together into a pseudo-montage, cut together with music playing in the background. Because of that, the frequency of Action Replays has been scaled back considerably."

Thanks for the link. I can't wait to see some videos of people running 5-on-5. My squad is going to be abusing people online. My court leadership is phenomenal!

Great find Muzy that new defensive mechanic sounds great. It looks like its something that can be used to counteract all those crazy bullet passes into the paint. Can't wait to see this stuff in action.

. Players can use deny defense, but run the risk of having the player they're guarding push by them in a quick cut in the opposite direction. The push and the deny defense are totally user controlled and need to be used wisely.

When the player on offense makes that cut the man on defense can tug on his jersey to slow him down. Do it too long and the refs will spot it and whistle you for a foul..

Models look great -- nice skin textures and good faces. Those features sound great -- haha, I can't believe that you can tug on their jerseys in 5-on-5 mode.. that's hilarious and awesome. Big online announcement coming, eh? It probably has to do with that "Your 2Kommunity Coming Soon!" announcement on the league pages...

The shot stick has also been reconfigured a bit and now offers a wider range of shots for different situations. Things like step thru shots and layups that require a series of adjustments to avoid a block are extremely fluid and natural without looking canned or planned in advance. The same IsoMotion controls govern the dribbling, so not a whole lot has changed there.

While this was our first real look at NBA 2K9, the game is already 90 percent complete. And it showed. Animations were tight, the crowd looked better than it ever has for the series, and the basketball actually felt like the genuine article. There's apparently a "big online innovation" announcement coming in the next few months, but online 5-on-5 play was big enough to please those in the room. There has also been "a lot of work done" to the franchise mode, but your guess is as good as ours as to what that means.
This sounds very promising to be 90% done.

hmm i wonder how the 5 on 5 animations going to be handled...in single player we've seen what happens when you call a play the cpu player go into a nice fluid motion animation for setting up plays

so if its 5 on 5 do each individual player have theyre own marking on where to stand?

Best case scenario, you're playing with five dudes who run plays that aren't programmed into the game. Imagine if your PG calls out "four" over his headset, and the team sets a screen for the PF and runs a backdoor cut option ending in an iso on the block.

That'd be a real step into the future of online sports right there.

I have no desire to play 5on5 user basketball. Hopefully that franchise improvement is legit.

Ugh, the one thing that continues to bug me is the total lack of emotion on the players faces when they are mid-shot, in contact with the defender. Boozer's face would likely be more intense than that nonchalant look he gives in the screenshot. I thought the whole "KG brings intensity" thing was a step in the right direction, but it looks like we're going to get stuck with robot player models yet again.
