Operation Sports writer and MaddenMania admin Bryan Clark checks in today with an opinion piece about the "Ask Corso" feature in NCAA Football. Check out his article, It Is Time to Relieve Corso of His Playcalling Duties.

"It’s high time we hand Corso his walking papers, at least when it comes to the play calling aspect. Since the feature was only marginally useful in the first place, it’s time to replace the feature with something relatively similar that can use the same basic programming, but at the same add a new level of depth. It’s time to add offensive and defensive coordinators."

Yes, it is time to relieve Big Lee "Torso" of his play calling duties. First of all and most important, please tell me NCAA 09 did away with "Ask Corso" as the default set of plays during the play calling screen. I have never used them once and would never plan on using computer recommended plays. If some assistance-craving newbie needs the computer to hold their hand during the game, then put it on a separate junior varsity daycare mode, not in the game. Keep Corso to maintain the authenticity of the Gameday atmosphere, but can the Ask Corso feature and please update his in game sayings, or at least limit the repeatedeness of them.

Such anger

Guess you missed the part about people using Ask Corso to make things harder for themselves...

Not so fast my friend......Corso's not really all that bad......I'd prefer Corso play calling duties over his commentaries cuz they are getting old.

I haven't read the article yet, but I remember certain head coaches having a book, or so they called it, where they have a list of plays they'd run in certain situations. 3rd and long or shot, etc. I'd much rather see something like this that real coaches come up with whether Corso is on it or not. Some real football knowledge would be nice as opposed to some randome play.

Yeah, I thought his nickname was "scooter, " not "schooner."

LMAO!!! Classic FYI I'm pretty darn good at this game and I do use Lee, when my playcalling is feeling particularly uninspired I like to go to this feature and I will usually pick a play out of the formation he selects.

great post, i hope that they do get him off because his playcalling is wack.

Meh. I've been under the impression that the Ask Corso feature was basically letting the CPU call your plays, that it's the same playcalling logic the CPU uses when you play against it. So, in other words, this issue has nothing to do with the Ask Corso feature so much as it does with playcalling-AI more generally.

O and D coordinators is a good idea, but it's not like a hundred other people haven't already suggested it.

The only issue I have with ask corso is that he seems to bring up the same few plays over and over again

# 12 Anti Honor @ 06/27/08 09:12 PM
Actually, in our franchise (nephew and I), we use ''ask corso'' feature, to keep us from choosing the same plays over and over again. The game is far too easy, even on the higher levels, if we have our choice of plays, especially if it comes down to needing a extra few yards, or first down.

I'm all for adding more to the feature, but if it's removed completely, the game would be even easier than it is now.

Or you wouldnt even have to create a guy. Have a pool of personnel that's available to hire each offseason. Each coach could have their tendencies, weaknesses and strengths. Maybe even give them a rating for developing talent. You could hire the QB specialist if you want to have a strong passing attack..and so on.

I like this idea Ralphsundin.... I also love that I was completely wrong about the way most people perceive the feature. Most of the people I am familiar with on the message boards are dynasty guys, and in general the people use the feature to (like you guys point out) keep them from calling the same plays over and over, but also to limit the "money-ish" plays.

Omg that was a great idea! That would be so badass. Oh man, now that you've gotten me to thinking about how much this would add to the game I want this feature now! Wow, great idea. Great article.

As for Corso, sure I could do without him, even though I do use him in PvP just to keep my opponent guessing. This OC/DC idea is just great. I would LOVE that feature. I now NEED that feature. I DEMAND that feature.

# 19 LingeringRegime @ 06/28/08 05:19 PM
I like using the feature. It does make the game harder, and that is the reason I use it.

It would be nice to one day have a feature like this, then be able to hire and fire position coaches and OC and DC. Think of the curscenes we could have then. The coordinators sitting in the booth thinking of stuff they could run. The position coaches filling out the sidelines. A player messes up, his position coach is right in his ear getting him right. It would be a great feauture that could include so much. But then you'd probly have people complaining and saying things like "well my OC doesnt sit in a booth, he's on the field". blah blah blah. I want realism too, but dang.

Anyway, great idea. Its definately something that would add alot of depth to the game for hardcore gamers... they would probly have to make a second dynsaty mode for it. Think about it, you could have spring games. Position coaches with position related drills. I can think of many more ways they could make this feature great. A nice touch would be to fill the sidelines up with more than just players and cheerleaders. There are people everywhere on the sidelines... Heck, Im a sports marketing intern at my college and IM ON THE SIDELINE LOL.
