MLB Power Pros 2008 News Post

The following sites have posted their MLB Power Pros 2008 hands-on previews.
  • IGN
"We were curious to see if the franchise would make a return this year, and 2K let us in on the news a few weeks back that we'd indeed be seeing a return to this strange 2K/Konami/Power Pro/MLB partnership not only for Wii and PS2, but also DS. In the last week or so we've had a chance to sit down with the console versions of the game and get into the specifics of '08 play. Not a whole lot has changed visually – in fact, almost nothing has – but the game is deeper and stronger than last year's effort, and already shows off a larger mode offering and data tracking system."

"In MLB Life mode, you can play as a real-life player, use your Success mode player, or start completely from scratch with a brand new character. The level of obsessive detail in Power Pros continues in this mode. Not only do you choose whether or not your character is married, but you also choose how many kids he has (and exactly how many of those children are girls, how many are boys, their names, and appearances). Those choices affect the storylines you'll see in MLB Life mode--if you're married, for example, you won't be able to go out on dates with other women (which doesn't seem to be very realistic to the MLB we know and love, but there you go). As in Success mode, you'll have plenty of choices to make in a day--practice, games, traveling, leisure time--but everything will be governed by your vitality meter. If you run out of vitality, you won't be able to play on game day."

The DS version isn't going to have success mode, MLB life mode, or season mode according to 2ksports.com. Also, it says that the ps2 and wii version are going to have the same features, so I'm not sure why the ps2 version is going to be $20 and the Wii version is going to be $40 but I'm glad I only have to pay $20 for the new game. http://www.gamestop.com/browse/searc...%20Pros%202008
Reading that killed my enthusiasm for the DS version. 2K continues to set portable sports games back.

Okay, good info, thanks. That's a bummer. I'm beginning to wonder how I justify this game for Wii if the motion controls don't add anything and if it's TWICE the price. Has anyone used the motion controls that can talk about if they're any good or not? (My guess would be no)

As for the cursor batting, I really liked that in older games like World Series Baseball for Genesis, and thought that games like MVP and the current MLB 2k games really dumbed down hitting. The Show uses zone batting that is basically the same as cursor batting, except you don't see it.

I like it because it's the best way to simulate tracking a pitched baseball with a control pad, and because it really draws attention to the different skill levels of players. Having a giant contact area with a hitter like Ichiro would make you feel confident as a hitter, whereas the hitting area for Richie Sexson should be so small that you can't make it out without an HDTV...haha.

lol, personal attack. Sensitive much? The game is made by Konami and published here by 2k. It's a Konami game. As i said, do some research with the game before posting nonsense as if any problem is 2k's fault.

LOL, I didn't see a personal attack either. Hypersensitive I guess.

I agree with the complainer about the walks, but not hit variety. I thought hit variety was pretty good in last years Power Pros.

Just picked up last year's Power Pros for the first time and I love it, but two questions:

1) Bullpen - For all of the depth this game has, is there any way to warm pitchers up in the bullpen? I was only able to do a straight swap, unless I'm missing something.

2) Franchise Mode - There's a season mode, which is one year, and there's Success/MLB Life mode, which is where you play as one guy trying to make the team. But is there a traditional "franchise mode" where you manage a team from year-to-year, make offseason moves, draft, etc.? If not, will that be in '08?

1) No bullpen in the first MLB power pros, but there will be in the 2008 version.

2) Season mode is franchise mode, it lasts only 10 years though, which sucks because thats not very long.

Nice, thanks buddy. Thought it was funny they omitted something as simple as warming up pitchers, but glad it's being added.

I hadn't had the chance to tinker with Season mode yet. 10 years is shorter than most, but to be honest, that would be longer than I ever stuck with one!
