MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

Pitching is hard, but I like it. Framerate sucks but it is playable. If you play with Aeriel Cam, there is no issue

What makes The Show so great (serious question - I've never played it)? Thanks for any responses.
I have had both games in the past and now, but haven't played much of the new ones. In my opinion, The Show is a very good sim like experience, but lacks a little bit of excitement for me for some reason, so I find myself playing some 2k baseball too. But, I always end up going back to the Show. I have not played this years Show since I just got it today, and I was excited to try out the new pitching system on 2k. Hopefully this years Show will have more excitement. The excitement in the Show had more to do with the sim situations I would get into when I would get deep into playing my franchise. But, for some reason, for me, last years show would get a little boring for me at times. Maybe it was the lack of presentation, and the PS2.5 graphics it had last year.

That's because you actually enjoy classic controls. I played 15 years of classic controls. I'm sick of them. I haven't bought a baseball game since MVP 05 (was a huge High Heat fan before it).

I rather just play OOTP if I play classic.

I don't get the special needs of 2k's baseball. If I have to clear the cache everytime i play to improve the FR, that is pure sadness.
I'm going to rent and try the camera etc..but 3 year into 'next gen' "COME ON!"
I Just mentioned it in case you are not online all the time like me. My 360 is not online all the time (long story, but has to do with my network hookup).

I think MVP 2005 or maybe it was 2004 had frame rate issues as well, throwing from 3rd to first threw the computer into fits.

Like i said, this is the next gen. Try to be innovative. I can overlook a few gripes if they are really trying to make the game a better experience.
WOW, The controls in the SHOW are just fine, I will most definitely give 2K8 more of a chance when I play more tonight, but please, the does many things right, there really no need to do anything different with there controls because they work just fine. Both games have there faults, but 2k8 has some issue that were not suppose to be there this year.

Yes it (the Show's pitching interface) can get a little old at times. I like the batting interface in the Show though. For 2k, I don't quite understand yet when to time my step with the right analog stick since I never used it in the past.

What is the difference between Hit Stick and Hit Stick 2.0
It's funny, but you can influence trajectory if you use classic batting according to the instructions.

Is there a patch for this game already?

# 933 Salhus @ 03/04/08 05:30 PM
Am I the only one amazed at the accuracy or signature windups and batting stances???

Im sure there are some that are off but the few games i've played are extremely accurate.

It adds a lot of realism to the game and I am simply amazed

not questioning you..thanks for the response, my comment was a general 'vent' - we are made to do something out of the ordinary that doesn't apply to any other game was my complaint, and that it would make playing all other games online annoying to boot up.

My question is always the same for games, and especially this: Can you edit the rosters and play games of non-user controlled teams? I'm guessing you can only control a handful of teams. I love in NBA 2K and College Hoops 2K how I can play any game I want during a season mode.

The Shows controls are no different than RBI Baseball. Get real . . .

I wish The Show had 2K's controls. However, I also wish 2K had the Shows graphics / framerate. LoL . . .

Yes, it loads one right away when you first put the game in.

Not for PS3, however.
