Uh oh, NBA Live 10 is not that bad, now what?
Posted on October 21, 2010 at 12:17 PM.
What a strange world I liive in. I spent the $60 for NBA 2k11 and yet last night I found myself playing the NBA Live 10 demo. We aren't talking about the game, we are talking about the Demo..and I LIKED IT!

I have been on the 2k bandwagon for years and 2k11 is a candidate for GOY so I am not, and will not disperage it for fear of being electronically stoned to death. However, one could argue that NBA Live 10 is more fun to play.

Maybe that's because its a little easier to pull off moves but the fact is that when you do string moves together and take it to the rack, it is very satisfying.

You know what else I noticed about Live 10? All the movement that you see in Czar's 2k11 videos (and remember the lack of movement from 2k10), all that movement and bumping and screening is in Live 10. Does it look as smooth, no maybe not but the game was released a full year earlier. I have a PS3 so I can come out and say that the arenas look better in Live 10 and the commentary, while not better than 2k11, is at least very good in Live 10.

In the interest of full disclosure, I must admit that I owned this game last year and I seem to remember that the main reason I gave it up was because I felt like there were too many drives to the basket and not enough jump shooting. If you know anything about this game can that be confirmed?

The point of this blog is two fold. First to EA, what were you guys thinking? Give us the shot stick portion of the Elite controls, the new broadcast team and SOME upgrades to Franchise mode and you have yourself a $60 game. I am just saying.

Second, I am thinking about picking this game up as a cheaper alternative and then selling my 2k11 so I can get some cash for another game.

Has anyone else considered that?

Feel free to comment on everything and anything I wrote or any thoughts you have on the two games.

I agree with BlackRome....so im not really going to rehash his basic point outside of saying

that i think that NBA Live is and online experience...where NBA 2k11 is an offline experience....thats where your going to find the best elements of both games...

I hear alot of folks hoping that EA gets the franchise mode 2gether..but i think this is looking at it the wrong way...i think EA should completely scrap the franchise mode and go 100% online....and build a game around an online experience....

from what ive noticed from my friends list is that most of the Live guys who are now playing 2k are not really interested in playing the offline Association mode or even 1 vs 1 online games....theyre most into team play...a NBA Live feature. But this is EA in general pretty much all of the sports games play better online that offline...or in someway shape or form it seems like offline has taken a backseat to online expansion

whereas 2k on the other hand is on 1 of the last sports titles left that imo still caters to the offline gamer..pretty much the 4gotten gamer it seems these days. i dont play online outside of leagues anymore because there are too many cheesers out there and im sure alot of other folks feel the same way...so someone looking 4 that endless depth..is more inclined to like 2k

i personally would never by 2 games of the same sport....but i think both titles could co-exist in the same way that Burger King and Subway can be right next door to each other if Live went 100% online....

It is very easy for 2k11 to be the better game but Live to be more fun. 2k is alot of work, there is no denying that and there is nothing wrong with that, and its not like it isnt fun at all. I just happen to think that Live's gameplay is more fun. 2k11 gameplay is more rewarding when you get there but Live is more fun IMO. 2k11 is the better game because of Jordan, and My Player and graphics and slight edge to commentary. However, just because it is the more polished, or better game doesnt automatically make it more fun to play.

Comparing 2k11 to Live 10 is as unfair a fight as putting Rosie Odonell up against Giselle Bunchen (sp) in a beauty pagent. But again, that is NOT what I was doing. I was merly pointing out that Live 10 is a viable option for NBA fans. Also, having fun with Live doesnt mean you are not a "sim" gamer, whatever that entails but gamers that detest Live in favor of 2k post comments in that vein all the time. I mean it is so bad that I knew what the comments would be before they were made.

I am not sure why everyone is so sensitive about 2k. In the OP, I only said that Live was "arguably" more fun. A statement that is supported by the fact that we are knee deep in "arguing" about it LOL.

Wow.

This is quite an entertaining thread. Some people get pretty upset when somebody likes a different game to the one they like.

And the funny thing is no one has categorically stated that Live 10 is a better game.

Didn't know showin' a bit of love to Live 10 could be so offensive.

Dare I say something nice about the Inside Drive series?

but anyway back to the point of the thread:

Q: Live 10 isn't that bad. Now what?

A: Play 2K or play Live 10 or play both. Whatever your preference.

I choose to play both. Anyone who disagrees with me is wrong. (joking) :P

OP: I get it, and I agree with a lot of what you said. Live 10 is fun and is easy to pick up and play. And, no, I don't think you dropped 2k11 because you're not good enough. I am not great with the isomotion, but I do run a lot of plays, and am still able to enjoy the game.

The biggest flaw in Live 10 is the CPU AI - ever notice how there are only, on average, two passes by the CPU per offensive possession? I just couldn't take the predictability. And as others have mentioned, the game has no depth.

The Live 10 could've improved the AI and the Dynasty mode, and there would have been competition for my money. It's too bad they scrapped it.

I agree that Live 10 is fun and that is the only major factor when it comes to games. 2K11 is an awesome game but it is far from perfect. The players responsiveness to the controls is tad sluggish at times and the passing, don't even get me started on that mess.

What 2K does well is presentation and the animations. Take that away, you may find yourself with a decent game with sluggish controls. Again, I am enjoying 2K11 but Live 10 is one of the best games in the Live series since the 90's.

What I am somewhat surprised about that EA will make hardly any money off of Live 10 since most people will buy it used and all used sales go to the retailer.

Either way, EA did the consumer right by supporting Live 10 for free...Whether you like Live or 2K, it is great to have two excellent options for different reasons....

You need to get a late pass.....Everybody knows that Live 10 was a good game. I think the best basketball of last year. That is why the NBA Elite change was such a shock.

@wepr3, YES! You nailed it on the offensive AI. I knew there was something else that I didnt like and that was it. Because they only made two passes, that lead to another problem. All of the shots (when jumpshots were taken) seemed to be taken from the same 5 spots on the floor.

@Eeski, yeah they wont make any money but for once, I actually think that wasnt the goal. Let's not kid ourselves though, they did this for themselves as much or more than for the fans. EA wants to keep people playing their games in spite of crisis. It was a great win-win move on their part.

Also, think about this. Live isnt NEARLY as important to EA as 2k11 is to 2K. I am not saying that not having Elite out isnt a huge hit but it is one that EA can absorb because of its other award winning titles and I guess I will begrudgingly throw Madden in there because enough people still by it (personally Madden makes me throw up in my mouth a little each time I see/play it but that too is another blog). The point is that EA can take a hit that 2k would not be able to absorb, or to put it another way, EA can afford to do the right thing.

I bought both games last year and 2k11. I don't know how anyone can say Live 10 was more fun. To me it's frustrating that guys can dribble, drive and dunk on every possession if they want to. This created a incredible amount of cheese online and offline. I won games, but it forced me to stop the cheesers and in instances, cheese myself. I'm a ball player. Played all the way up to the JUCO level and it's not fun when anyone can pick up a ball game and be superior. I wish they leave that to NBA Jam.

Live 10 did have FIBA teams, jerseys shoes and the atmosphere right. I also liked the commentary. But when you stepped on the court it was ALL BAD. The fun factor was terrible. It was a dribble and dunk fest. No help D, no mid range game. If you're not a hoops fan you can overlook these things and get to the glamour part of ball, but if you relish in the sweet science, stay AWAY. Even for $10 and a roster update it's not worth it. You will be frustrated beyond belief. I believe that's why Mike Wang left and went back to create the greatest bball game EVER!!

And this is from a guy who has owned every 2k and every EA Ball game since Lakers vs. Celtics. Live was #1 to me until around 2k2, but was still tied until the analog stick ruined any notion of sim ball.. Live 10 I averaged 90ppg with 70 of them in the paint lol..

Regarding Live/Elite and Madden "EA Sports, It's NOT In The Game"..

nice blog but as someone stated, you're late. Live 10 was a very fun game imo, and EA should have just built off that title but they didn't. 2k11 is extremely fun as well imo and on a whole nother level of video game basketball pleasure.

Hey guys whats up, I just want to start by thanking you for making this post. I have been a long time gamer like many of us who visit this site, so I really have fun perusing the forums and reading whatever interesting tidbit that catches my eye. I have not played a full game of 2K11 just the demo, and from playing I can see why its getting a lot of praise. It is the best of both worlds and it has Jordan, nuff said. However to me its really nothing new lots of polish and plenty replay value(not a bad thing at all), I guess what Im getting at is 2K12 has to start a rebuilding process cuz I think they have hit a wall. This is why its a bit baffling to me why EA is getting so much flack. I think with Live 10 Mike Wang gave them some insight on how they developed 2K, ie diff play style animations for diff positions. Live 10 is a great game it lacks depth in animations but still very fun, very intuitive and I love the controls. So long story short Live 10 and 2k11 are not that far apart from a devolopment standpoint IMO. In addition I know people might think Im nuts but I really Like the Elite 11 demo. I really think everyones opinion affected the next persons. It is far from perfect but it is the future, and thats the truth. The fact that the ball feels live is a step ahead of the other game. I implore you all take total control make your own moments canned animations although pleasing to the retina and its what we are used to is not really how basketball is played in real life.

@indiedog I do feel like the voice of the fans can be a hurtful thing however I doubt that had much sway, eventhough we give good ideas and feedback we do not understand the best way to deliver a videogame thats why we have all the time in the world to point out the most miniscule faults. In closing I ****s wit Elite 11 if it was out I would buy it, I cant stop playing the demo I wish I knew someone who was as good as me so I can really get a feel of its potential.
No Canned Animations=Instant Replay Value

@100themonkey, nice post! You see guys, this isnt about 2k being better. It is about Live being a fun option and being enough of a sim to be worth 20.00 even just for a roster update.

What I am beginning to notice here is that EA is the establishment and all the 2k folks are just following the trend of being anti-establishment. Now it definently helps your cause that 2k has made the best basketball game over the last few years but alot of 2k people bash EA and bash the games and bash the EA fans like it is just the cool thing to do.

Calling Elite or Live arcade is a perfect example of this. Think of a spectrum with "sim" on the left and "arcade" on the right. I think we can all agree that 2k is on the extreme left and NBA Jam is on the extreme right. If we can also agree that Live belongs somewhere in the left(ish) middle (because it has way more characteristics of sim than arcade), than why do 2k fans continue to desparige its sim nature by comparing it to NBA Jam. This is a retorical question of course. We already know the answer. It is because you are "fan"atics of the series and you want to validate your choice as well as make others "see the light". Nothing wrong with that, it just suprises me the lengths to which someone will go to do that.

The fact is that both games are good. My opinion is that Live 10 was not as far off from 2k10 as 2k fans might want to think and I agree with 100th that when Elite gets itself toghether a little bit, 2k better innovate or its in big trouble.

"2k all day" "Or at least until Live comes out with the better game".

NBA2k11 is a a very good game, but I'm starting to think its a smidge overrated.

The brilliance of NBA2k, is that Mike Wang took a lot of the good that was in NBA 10, and morphed it with the best qualities of 2k10, and cleaned up a lot of mess.

With that said, I dont think its the so called, best sports game ever.

To this day, NBA Live 2005 is the most complete basketball title I have ever played.

NBA Live 10, is an excellent game as well, and I'm astonished that Elite is in the state that it is in.
