A College Football Dynasty: The Bruce Jackson Story
Posted on June 8, 2013 at 04:39 PM.
Hello, My name is Bruce Jackson. After many years of coaching high school football players in my home city of Lake Oswego, OR I finally have the opportunity to coach at the Collegiate level. This is my story.

Before we begin, a little background information about me. Coming out of Lake Oswego High School I was considered a 2* HB Recruit. I played well in high school and was third in the state in both rushing yards and TDs. While I didn't have big name colleges sending me countless letter to come and play for them, I was recruited. I eventually had a tough decision between going to the local Portland State University and playing 1-AA (yes, this was before FBS/FCS) or leaving Oregon and playing at the 1-A level for New Mexico. While I never did get to start a game at UNM, I did play some games and even scored a touchdown in my junior year on a 28 yard carry. After college, knowing that my chances at playing professionally were slim, I returned home and become the Offensive Coordinator at my old high school. I eventually became the head coach at LOHS and managed to help the Lakers turn around 4 straight losing seasons into 5 straight state playoff appearances (Including a game in the State Championship). My skills as a coach have been proven at the high school level, and now I have a great opportunity to become an Offensive Coordinator in the FBS.

Incredible! I don't know what part of the game was better. The game winning touchdown reception by Mataele with 8 seconds left, or Randle's 3 TD, 122 yard game. I'll admit it, I was concerned last week after Cornett's injury that Randle might not be ready to start a game and play some major downs. Instead, he impressed all of us and helped us win the game. Nick Sherry had a less than decent game, throwing 4 picks, and nearly costing us the game with a fumble on an option play with 1:08 left in the 4th. but on the final drive of the game, Sherry made all that up and more with an incredible 75 yard TD play to win the game.

UNLV took their longest road trip of the season today when they head to Ruston, LA to face off against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. The 4-1 Bulldogs' only loss came at home to Texas A&M who currently ranks as the #7 team in the country. UNLV's starting HB, Tim Cornett, is still injured and looks as if he will not play this week, nor next week when UNLV hosts rival Nevada.

UNLV's fifth game of the season ended in a loss today as the Rebels lost 18-16 to Louisiana Tech. Bradley Randle (HB replacing Cornett) did not impress as much as last week, rushing for 86 yards and a single touchdown. Perhaps the saddest part of the loss is the fact that Kicker Nolan Kohorst missed a field goal and an extra point today. Had he hit the 38 yard field goal in the first quarter, UNLV might have pulled off an impressive win today.

RIVALRY WEEK

There has been one goal on the minds of all of our players all season. We make sure to focus on each game each week when it is time to play it, but there is one game that matters to our players more than all of the others. UNLV vs. NEVADA. Our players hate our rivals from the north, and they hate us. This game is The Battle for Nevada. The Wolf Pack have an undefeated 6-0 record, but our players want to change all of that. We have been practicing all year for this game. Many of our key recruits are attending this game, including: QB Cory Hickman, HB Brad Washington, T Scott Clark, CB Douglas Kendrick, and P Nate Lester. This game is important to both our season, our pride and our future.

Incredible! UNLV WINS!

We prepared for this game all year and it paid off. A huge win for our season, and our team. Most people did not believe that we could win this game, but we jsut proved them wrong. Everything was going for us toady. A sold out crowd at Sam Boyd helped rally the team after the first half and the Rebels managed to defeat the Wolf Pack in today's game. Nick Sherry won player of the game honors throwing for 303 yards, and 4 TDs. The game was won in the second half. UNLV got the ball down 24-10 and managed to score 24 unanswered to win the game.

After the huge win over rival Nevada, many recruits decided that the time was right to commit to UNLV. These recruits include: Cory Hickman, Nate Lester, Douglas Kendrick, and Casey Schultz. All of these recruits visited UNLV during the Nevada game and went home future Rebels.

Despite their 3-3 record, Boise State is always a tough competitor. The Broncos are one of the most recognizable mid-major college football programs, and their home field is always a tough place for opponents to play in. Boise State might be having a bad season, but UNLV will still need to have a good game if they want to come home with a much needed victory. Good news for UNLV fans, as starting HB, Tim Cornett looks like he will be able to play in today's game.

When Nick Sherry went down early in the game against Boise State, many UNLV fans thought that the game was going to be a blowout. Without a true backup quarterback to replace Sherry, Offensive Coordinator Bruce Jackson had no choice and put in WR Caleb Herring at QB. While the receiver hadn't played QB in some time, he helped lead the Rebels to an incredible victory in today's game. Herring finished the game throwing 8-16, 137 yards through the air, 2 Passing TDs, 72 rushing yards, rushing TD. Tim Cornett had his first game back since his elbow injury vs Air Force and finished with 122 yards on the ground as well as 10 reception yards.

MIDSEASON UPDATE

It is week 9 on the 2012 college football season, and this is your mid-season report. the UNLV Rebels are 5-2 and ranked 2nd in the Mountain West conference. Currently undefeated in conference play, the Rebels owe a large majority of their success to Quarterback Nick Sherry who currently is throwing 96-160 with 1635 yards and a TD/INT of 15/10.

As the Offensive Coordinator, I signed a contract when I got here that gave me certain goals to complete during my first 2 years here. I am currently on pace to complete all of the goals, and have done so with 5 out of the 8 already.

In recruiting, UNLV already has 6 recruits committed for next season, of these, there are Three 3* prospects, Two 2* and One 1* giving the Rebels the current 54th best recruiting class so far.

UNLV hosts conference opponent New Mexico today at Sam Boyd Stadium. This is it. I finally have a chance to coach against my old team. But old memories are just that, my time and team is now and UNLV. Still, looking at their season, it was hard not to be impressed, they started out 3-0, beating Texas, Texas Tech, and blowing out their instate rivals 49-0. Each of their 4 losses was respectable, a 45-31 loss to Boise State, losing in OT in Hawaii, and losses to Air Force and Fresno State. If we wanted the win, we had to play much better than we had last week.

When starting quarterback Nick Sherry went down, UNLV fans didn't flinch, after his success at quarterback against Boise State, Caleb Herring was expected to keep up his play and lead the Rebels to another victory. But when Herring went out in the third quarter with the score tied, it was up to Sean Reilly to lead UNLV to a victory over New Mexico. Reilly's 5-8 126 yards and 2 TDs did just that.

UNLV got yet another commit today as Offensive Tackle Scott Clark from Boulder City, NV committed to UNLV. The 6'8, 320 lbs. Tackle should help out the UNLV offensive line, and might even start next year as a freshman. He is rated as the #49 Tackle and a 3* recruit.
