Re: AEW Revolution (March 6th, 2022)

This is a stacked freaking card. One thing I like that AEW does is they can build good PPV cards without needing titles. Maybe it’s because the whole “Wins/Losses matter” tag line they love to say (even though we have plenty of examples of people “jumping the line”), but I do seem to care more about the outcome of these matches.

My issue with AEW is that since they don’t like to go the DQ route, they protect their wrestlers by putting them against people a tier below. So we know Punk will beat a Spears and there’s no intrigue there. We know Hangman will beat Archer but Archer will beat Starks who will beat a QT. The matches are usually good and they’re not squashes, but essentially knowing the result can make for some lackluster TV viewing (this is why the promos are often the best parts of the show- especially since they give the wrestlers creative freedom).

However, the PPVs are always great because it’s people in the same “tier” going at it and I want to see who wins and will get pushed forward. Also since people don’t usually get a billion rematches, it makes some of these encounters feel special. It’s also easier to have bigger PPVs when you only do 4 a year (I wish they’d do 6).

The only match I don’t care about is basically anything involving Matt Hardy/AHFO. I really hope this “merger” is leading to a split where Andrade/Matt can have a match and Andrade can move on from the whole HFO thing. Hardy feels like such a waste at this point in his career and he can’t seem to elevate anyone who is with or against him.

I think Matt is just waiting at this point to tag back up again.

I could see the story being Matt leaving the "Andrade Hardy Family Office" for the "Hardy Family". I believe Jeff's no compete is up the week after the PPV.

But this card does look great. But that point you mentioned is the downside to AEW trying to not have unclean endings or DQ finishes. You aren't having someone like Mox, Punk, Danielson losing to a Spears, Garcia, Lee clean or anything. If we had DQ or unclean finishes, you could have guys costing others the match which if done properly (and not frequently per show), could build more than someone just competing in a 15 min match where you know whose winning anyways.

But I have no desire for a Hardy’s reunion either. They could probably do a decent storyline versus the Bucks but beyond that, I don’t really care (though it would be better than than the Hardy Family Job Squad angle). I always thought Hardy could’ve been a decent mentor/tag partner for Darby if not for Sting. He could basically make the case that he’s like a “little brother” to him. The way he rocks the face paint, has an alt-vibe and is a daredevil in the ring… just reminds him of family (obviously alluding to Jeff without naming him). They could tag for awhile before eventually feuding and having Darby move on.

And yeah I agree and even named that the way AEW protects their wrestlers is the biggest flaw for me with the company. I prefer it this way because wins/losses are more meaningful than if I can just beat you with a chair without having to have a match at all. But it does have its own annoying drawbacks. I would like to see the DQ finish make it’s way in if it makes sense storyline wise and not just a way to protect and not have to have a finish. For example, when MJF eventually wins the strap I hope he gets himself DQ’d all the time. I want him to be like 1-18 as champion. And he doesn’t care about the record because he’s still the champ. Then when he eventually loses, he’s forced to wrestle on Dark with all the other jobbers (because of said record), which causes him to go on strike, or make Wardlow do it for him because he’s too big for Dark. Or he just goes on vacation until the records resent in January and we have video packages of him douching it up in Cabo. There’s a lot of storyline possibilities you could go with.
