I believe they've proven, by their own full disclosure and willingness to listen/discuss to their fans that they strive to make the best game that the fans want. Ultimately, competition doesn't matter as much as making a product that satisfies its users.

In any event...that's going outside of the thread here. Send me a PM if you want to discuss it further.
Definitely, this is true to some extent. But if MVP came out with photorealistic grass and players you better bet your bum The Show team would be working overtime to match that. And they don't seem interested atm, though, small strides are being made here and there. The players are improving very much, but this has also been due for years.

It's crazy that anyone thinks this, and that so many people agree here. SCEA's gameplan would definitely change and react to competition lol. This is how business works. To deny this is to deny reality. Sony is a very conservative company. Some studios have a long leash and some do not. I doubt SD has a super long leash, as in they are allowed to do their own thing in the face of hard competition.

It's always easy to say we would not change when there is no competition. The minute things heat up is the minute things start changing faster. Been there done that. Happens every single time.

But.... there is no competition. So there ya go.

First of all, this "The Show doesn't have any competition" thing is beyond beating a dead horse. That horse is also liquid by now. Been there, done that, nothing new under the sun for anyone to add.

Secondly, for all the "competition makes the world go 'round" side of the argument being presented here, your argument lacks two main pieces.

A. The devs are competing against themselves to actually be good at their jobs. This piece of the puzzle is CONSTANTLY left out by people clamoring for more companies to be making mediocre baseball games just for the sake of "competition." The devs also play the game and want a good game just as much as we all do. That is plenty of motivation without the boogeyman of external competition. Personally, I don't need to "compete" against anyone externally to want to be good/better at my job. I think a lot of people take pride in what they do and don't need to be coerced into trying harder to be good.

B. They have plenty of competition for our time. They don't have to be competing against another baseball game to try to keep our attention on this game. There is a whole world of other activities, video game and otherwise, that their product is always competing against for our time and money. If the game ever falls behind and the devs get lazy, then people will spend their time elsewhere. And then people get laid off.

Third of all, I just don't get what SCEA's level of competition has to do with the specific presentation and commentary features at hand (that we are supposed to be discussing in this thread in the first place).

You claim the competition thing is a dead horse and then you proceed to spend several paragraphs attempting to resuscitate said dead horse. Interesting.

Briefly:

A. Konami's PYS franchise is most definitely not mediocre. There are many baseball aficionados who swear by it's hitting mechanics for example. And from what I've heard, MVP wasn't mediocre either. Good competition tends to lead to better products from all involved. It essentially at least doubles the resources available to innovate and design better and gives a financial incentive to do so.

And saying that a little healthy competition would be nice is no knock on the developers at The Show. It's just business.

B. People will buy a mediocre product (to be clear, I am not saying that The Show is mediocre) if it's all that's available and they feel a need for said product. There are many, many consumers who 'need' a baseball videogame with modern graphics, internet gameplay and updated rosters. As far as competing with games from other genres and life in general, I broke down the flaw with that elsewhere: that competition is for casual gamers just looking to having some quick fun. It will almost certainly not lead to hardcore sim innovation because those consumers do not value hardcore simulation.

As for why the competition thing continues to be discussed in this thread: it was touched on by a developer. They can post what they want and I assume responses to those posts are are also allowed. And yes, presentation and commentary would benefit from competition. I just saw someone post a video with Gary Thorne calling a 2k game and that man just has a voice made for videogames. I personally like Vasgersian's 'just the facts' style but someone like Thorne would probably immediately impress potential consumers who prefer a more emotional/lively call.

Yeah, I brought up competition but we have no control over what other companies do. When I started working on baseball at SDS, we had lots of competition. EA, Acclaim, Midway, 3DO (High Heat), and later 2K. Somehow we're the last ones standing. We're not going anywhere.

Bring it!

Mike Krukow of the MVP Baseball series. Can't think of any others.

As for competition talk, I believe it potentially breeds excellence (though based on the horse's mouth, you can't deny they do that already), but it is probably best for consumer only, not the companies themselves. The only real advantage I can see for a company is other games can inspire them to do new things that no one else had done before. I remember when some game (maybe a 2K game?) started with an e-mail system to the GM/Owner, what have you. Every game after that put it in. Things like that really bring about the best in game quality, but as I said that helps out the customer more than anybody else.

I may miss competition because I miss choice and flavor, but if there was only one PS4 baseball game out on the market, I'm sure glad this is the one. Too bad it didn't work that way for football.
