Learning About The Game

My son and I went to our first hockey game this past week (Dallas Stars vs Detroit Red Wings) and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. We're both looking to learn more about the game as we plan to attend more games in the future. We're already watching random games on ESPN+, but looking for some books and stuff to supplement just watching games.

Any good books, websites, etc. y'all recommend? My son is 14, so not looking for anything too "kiddie" as ideas for Christmas presents. Already got him SI's The Hockey Book and a fun book about the history of goalie masks. I started reading The Russian Five on the suggestion of my FIL (a die hard Wings fan) and enjoying it so far.

Thanks in advance!

Hmmm, maybe something along these lines?

And then of course, this classic:

Re: Learning About The Game

If you're interested in international hockey with a Cold War backdrop, I'd look for books on the 1980 Miracle on Ice and the 1972 Summit Series. Not sure which ones would be considered definitive, though.

Re: Learning About The Game

I'd say maybe watching YouTube videos could help too. Something as simple as looking up videos that explain the rules would be a good start.

If you own a gaming console, buying the EA Sports video game would help to learn the game and players too.

Then it's definitely worth playing the game, even if it's on an easier mode, or simply going through tutorials, to learn things about the game.

Even franchise mode would help too if you just sim games and learn players names and who is good and who isn't.
