2014 Free Agency/Trade Thread

Bears sign QB Jay Cutler to a 7 year deal, per PFT.com

They also extended CB Tim Jennings and G Matt Slauson to 4 year deals as well:

Re: 2014 Transactions Thread

Sounds good to me.

7 more years of 1 win in every 10 games against the Packers. I am okay with this.

Re: 2014 Transactions Thread

I'm cool with this. Probably overpaid, but when you look around the league, it's the smart choice for the Bears. They don't have a draft pick waiting to take over, and they're not going to sign a free agent to start while learning the playbook.

I'd only really be concerned about overpaying if it impacts their ability to fix this terrible defense. I can't wait for the news that they literally blow up Chris Conte's contract.

Re: 2014 Transactions Thread

So I guess the Bears are content with just getting to the playoffs occasionally over the next few years.

For those against Chicago bringing Cutler back, what would the alternative be?

Re: 2014 Transactions Thread

Never thought I'd see Cutler become a $100m (might be closer or higher than $126m) QB, but we'll see how long the contract actually is. Probably more like 4-5 years with the 7 helping defer the cap hit.

No issues with the signing, but 7 years?

There isn't one. You could go with McCown and draft another one, but this allows them to strictly concentrate on their D in the draft.
