NBA Video Rulebook / Traveling rule changed

http://www.nba.com/videorulebook/

Quote:
Ever see a referee call a charge on a play you swore was a block? Or insist LeBron James took an extra step on his way to the rim?

If so, it's time to go to the videotape.

The NBA launched a video rulebook Thursday, a site where fans can watch clips of plays accompanied by explanations of the rules.

Stu Jackson, the league's executive vice president of basketball operations, said the rulebook, found at http://www.nba.com/videorulebook, would be "a place of reference for everyone with respect to how our games are officiated."
Also, the NBA has officially changed the rules on traveling this season.

NBA changes traveling rules

Quote:
The NBA has put into writing a rule allowing players on the move to gather the ball, after driving or catching it, and then take two steps. Throughout NBA history, the rulebook said players could take one step.

That's good they finally changed the rule to match how they've officiated it for quite a while now. Thanks for the heads-up on this...

Re: NBA Video Rulebook / Traveling rule changed

I don't know what to make of the travel rule... in theory, nothing should change since they have been calling it that way everywhere, just now is the first time "two steps after the dribble" has been explicitly stated. In reality, where one step was really two, how long before two becomes three, especially with that crab dribble mess.

The video rulebook? I'll definitely watch for reference but I doubt this sticks, like the ref show they had on NBA TV.

On a positive note, more transparency is always a good thing. Don't know if these are "post donaghy" steps or replacement ref steps, but this will let people know if they have a leg to stand on before the skewering of the replacement refs begins. Last nights snoozefest (Pistons / Mavs) had one sexy call where a ref killed a Mavs fastbreak to call a tech on Chris Wilcox (who wanted a foul on the other end). Lets hope the refs keep their blunders to stuff like that.

Re: NBA Video Rulebook / Traveling rule changed

What do they mean gather?

What you mean to tell me these bigger, stronger, more athletic, more skilled players can't even follow simple basketball rules?

They're always changing rules that either make no basketball sense, or something to cater to players who can't do it right.

You touch on a very good topic. We constantly hear how "today's" NBA player is bigger/stronger/faster than those that came before them. Which has some truth.

However, where do the basketball IQs of those who played w/ Russell, Cousy, West, and Robertson rank w/ today's NBA player?

I think there's a disparity between the two in both aspects, and each zero each other out.
