Who cares if he tried it?

Alcohol is worse for you IMO. I've smoked on and off for almost 20 years and I've got two degrees + held some very good jobs.

The only significant part of that story IMO is:

"We had become big-headed jerks, me in particular," James said

"Had become" = wrong tense. He has become and still is a big headed jerk...and I hope he looks in the mirror and realises this. He's still very young and I hope this summer, the not shaking hands thing, the 'NIKE' tape thing etc etc are things he realises are ruining his reputation.

I really hope he turns it around.
