Could be worse. They could have matched the Yankees offer to CC.

Sometimes the Brewers have to compete with the Yanks, Sox and the Cubs of the world.

Therefore, they have to overpay at times.

Overpaying for good players is one thing, overpaying for highly mediocre players is another thing entirely.

No team, no matter their payroll limitations, needs to spend that kind of money for back of the rotation starters. It was bad contract, there's no way to rationalize that.

The Brewers being a small market team(payroll limitations or not) will overspend at times for mediocre players to be competitive. I think they overspent for Looper as well.

This might be a bit off topic, but the Bucks have overspent for less than mediocre talent because they are in a small market. Gadzuric is making $6 million/yr sitting on the bench, some nights not playing. He is not the only bad contract they are trying to rid of. The GM of the Bucks stated they have to overspend on FA's because they are in a smaller market.

Same with the Brewers. Bad contracts or not. If they want to stay competitive and put forth a formidable team, they will have bad contracts or players being over compensated for what they should be earning.

I look at it this way. With Selig, the Brewers had the lowest payroll on the market and didn't make the playoffs for 16yrs. Now, they are 4 times the payroll they had in the Selig years, and last year they were competitive and backed into the playoffs. They drew 3 million fans last year vs the usual 1 million. I'll take the latter format anytime as a fan.
