Forgive me if this was posted already but besides the over the top stuff, the animations in this game look incredible. Too bad it never came to fruition. It would be interesting to see what other companies could do with football if the license wasn't exclusive.

Retro's always had a great art team. Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 3 are some of the best looking games on the GameCube and Wii, respectively.

That kickstarted looked pretty cool but that's the exact reason why 2k doesn't make another game. That kickstarted only got 12k. I don't think if 2k made a game with fake teams like 2k8 it will sell. It's just not worth it.

You also have to take into account that not everyone has heard about this project. For one thing, I never heard about this project until this very minute. Plus, 2k is already an established company that has put out respected football titles.

Re: Retro Football Animations

Also have to take into account that the specific Kickstarter campaign (regardless of the product in question) was, for a video game fundraising drive, really not very good.

There's no track record from the development studio (or even a single developer on the staff) of ever releasing a completed game, almost zero project updates on the Kickstarter page, no showing of the work-in-progress final game, very limited showing of technology backing the game, an unrealistic project budget, an unrealistic project scope, uninspired backer goals, an adversarial tone towards peers in the football video game space, few details on beta / launch roll-out and title updates over time...

This company could have done many things better. Kickstarter isn't a charity; unless you have a celebrity promoting your page, one is going to have to put a great deal of work into merely the preparation of the fundraising campaign alone if one really would have wanted to pull this off.

Re: Retro Football Animations

I've certainly seen worse packaged football kickstarters - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...idiron-gamepak. This one looks like they just took a few wishlist threads and some screenshots/animations and dumped them on Kickstarter for a payday, brief discussion here: http://www.operationsports.com/forum...ideo-game.html.

But either way, the XFL approach - 'F the rest, we're the best' needs to be backed up by a profitable and sustainable product, not a request for the money to get you there for the most part.

SRRN (the game company I work for) tried the Kickstarter route for a game once. We prepared for it and developed promotional materials for it at least two months in advance and had an idea as to how we were going to continuously snowball support throughout the process. We had in-dev gameplay footage to show off, we had a track record of several released games (including two published by big-name publishers), and we even developed and released an arcade-style mini game loosely based in our Kickstarter game's universe during the campaign in an attempt to prove our competency to potential backers. We also had a more modest funding target than either of these two football games. Even with all that, we failed to reach our funding goal, and missed by a wide margin.

The point being, one can't just throw anything up on Kickstarter and expect a groundswell of support. It takes a ton of work (and honestly, some luck as well) to even come close. Not saying it can't be done, but it's going to take more than just random people saying "oh, let's just crowd fund something."

EDIT: I vaguely remember that Smashmouth Football project. That's all really care to say about it.
