You using gimp or PS? In PS you can adjust the size of the border using the Stroke effect. I'd recommend downloading the college font from dafont. You can't really edit the size of the border with just the PNG, and this way you can make it yourself.

this is where it's at now, I think that if I leave the black background I don't have to worry about the gold being thicker.

Thoughts?

Unless you plan on using the logo on a non-black surface (the field for instance), it's whatever you want.

yeah I want to use them on jerseys too so I was working over in TB and realized I had to take the black off

good thing making the black background didn't take long at all
