Clunky substitutions - Any Tips?

Edit: Just read the patch thread. I guess some of my concerns have been addressed.

I've been enjoying the game so far but one of the annoyances for me is making substitutions. The on the fly substitution feature is rather lackluster. I find myself having to pause the game and make subs instead. Is there any tips for someone to use on the fly subs?

I would think the best time to do on the fly substitution would be during a replayed foul. But guess what? You can't make a sub during the replay. If you attempt to make a sub during a replay, pressing a button would just exit the replay and cancel your sub screen.

I also tried to do on the fly substitution between free throws. But apparently players do not get subbed in between free throws if I do on the fly subbing (players do sub in between free throws if I paused and subbed).

Am I doing something wrong or is just on the fly substitution just plain clunky? One thing I did wish was changing on the on the fly substitution works. First of all, if you can sub while watching replays it would be great. I think the whole "select and scroll" interface for subbing is too tedious especially if you are trying to do it while playing the game. Instead you should just highlight the player and press left/right to scroll in a new player. This saves time not having to scroll to the bottom of the bench list. It also saves a few clicks which is pretty valuable if you are trying to do a substitution while in the half court.

yeah I had put this in the patch request before it was released, but I dont think they had time to include it in this patch.. The same thing goes for the play calling menu on the PS3.... For some reason the play testers let these slip through the cracks..
