how the hell do you call for a pick?

I can't figure out how to call for a pick to save my life.

When holding the ball with the dribble still alive, L1 sometimes will call for a pick, but usually it just brings up a list of plays to choose from.

When dribbling, L1 never calls for a pick but instead always brings up a list of plays.
