Need help! The Association (NBA 2K10)

I've spent a few good hours today on my day off messing around in practice mode with NBA 2K10, trying to learn the moves and mechanics. I am still a little clueless how and when play calling comes into affect and what you make a playcall.

I then went into "The Association" and woah, I have no idea what is going on what "Bird Years" and "Bird Rights" is, I need a serious walk through in this game for NBA 2K11 I really want to get into basketball.

Can someone Skype with me and walk me through and tell me everything and help me with my game play?

Bird Years is basically when someone doesn't leave a team through free agency for 3 years. Bird rights allow teams to sign players above the salary cap

All this is explained by just hitting one of the d-pad buttons. Can't believe you missed this, since I brought that window up every off-season with no intent of doing so.

My entire game is off, man. I don't know how to pass right or when to do hesitation and step ups and all that. I know the controls for everything, I just don't know when to do it in a live game! I do not know how to call plays. I am just new to basketball dude. Someone help

It may sound like a cliche, but if you are new to bball, watch some real NBA games ... look for them on the net or on NBA channel ... also watch some CPU vs CPU games ... finally: practice, practice, practice ... and even then, when you get 2k11 you will have to do it all over again as most things are changed and the AI is even thoughter.
