What happened to the realistic shot contests?

One of the best parts about this game at launch was the smoothness of shot contesting - you weren’t penalised for a defender behind you, or putting their hand up late in the release.

Now...it’s back to the same old way where a defender near you registers a strong contest. I don’t understand how a game can change this much in a patch as it feels just more like 2k18 without the blow byes.

The game was not ready for it with the fundamental flaws in gameplay mechanics

It’s a shame because a lot of the work of superstars is getting that sliver of space and firing - and without that concept it’s hard to replicate that feeling. Such a shame I do think this game was much better before being patched.

I feel like the game was moving forward and getting more realistic with how it was before the patches, and now has taken a bit of a step back in terms of realism imo. The online guys ruined it though with all the stretch big bs. As far as offline goes though, you can still replicate it with the sliders.

I agree with OP. They added these more effective contests to combat sharps, when what they should have been done is:
1. remove greens being 100 percent makes (Which they won't due bcuz kids)
or
2. Remove 84 attribute chance to green 100% of shots

Now what we have is typical 2k, No faceup post/midrange game, but also a pure sharp Green three game as soon as you get a sliver of space from deep.
What 2k has essentially done is made a more polarized caricature of basketball. The problem wasn't shot contests (excluding them being slow).
The problem was shot make percentages, open and contested.

Funny thing is the shot contest patch hasnt solved the problem. All people do is throw full court outlet passes to 3 point cherrypicking shooters in the corner so they can green threes. So teams/players are still are shooting 50 threes a game sometimes and making 60 percent. Which means if youre taking 2 point layups or shots, you would have to be making about 90 percent of those shots to compete.

To me this new motion engine just doesnt work, too much sliding warping and area of effect problems, positioning doesn't play a part in alot of situations.
