Transcription of Psuedo Defense Blog from Stream

***Title Change Please to Transcript of Defensive Blog from Stream.

Since it looks like we are not getting a Defensive blog, so the cliff notes version with missing info will have to suffice.

https://twitter.com/ScottOGallagher/...71843611357185

11m31s: Success Grading System Adaptive Coaching Enginge(ACE) driven system that can look at your or the CPU success rate after a set or action. This system allows the ACE to make to make defensive adjustments based on variables and predictors. Example Lebron has 15 points on 50% shooting in the first half, Devs would project him on potentially going for 60. With the Success Grading System(SGS) they can adjust to the set he was a more efficient scorer and only adjust to that, but there are global changes being made as well. This is year one of SGS, and you will see a lot more going forward. In Short the SGS looks at all the actions and adjust accordingly.

14m28s: The Hedge Man and Switching The Hedge defense is now data driven and now can be "updated" to change his spot within the scheme do I raise him up, do I drop him back, or do I sit him over. All based on actions and how successful you are and it allows for cleaner and better switching. Under 5 seconds the hedge man will automatically switch. Hedge man changes are 1. The Success of the Ball handler, 2. What offensive Set are they in, 3. Where the Ball is or catch location if the ball is in the corner force the ball handler baseline, and 4. What team does he play for

23m23s: Picking up the Pressure In previous iterations of NBA 2K the Defender would wait to pick up near the 3 point line, now it's more authentic to the NBA picking up between 30 thru 40 feet is one of the biggest changes to NBA 2K19. In addition to picking up the pressure the defender will try to force you to use your weak hand force him left or right. So the defense will try to dictate the high Pick and Roll game. The pressure will change depending upon the match up, players like K. Leonard, C. Paul, or P. Beverly may treat you differently at 43 feet as oppose to 27 feet.

28m18s: On Ball action and Move Recognition We wanted to keep improving the intelligence while playing up top, in order to do so we had to make sure we had the right situational context, e.g. P. Beverly pressuring Lonzo Ball. If the Center has the ball on the perimeter and is switched and a guard is defending him, the guard will now become aggressive in his steal attempt or pressuring the ball.

31m43s: Hedge Specific Rotations If we are in a "catch hedge" or if the set is 4 out 1 in, high Pick and Roll we're catching we have the ability to turn off all the rotations on the back end so you can play with the 2 man concept. We also have extended our short corners with our help rotations. Meaning guys will not so easily leave the corner, but they could because out "help system" will act like it would in real life. Where ever the player is standing, let's say weak side low post he's going to help. If you don't want him to help I highly suggest you put him on "tight/deny" Moderate is for more of in the corner situations. He is going to help depended upon where he's at if the guy is beat.

35m23s: Play Recognition 2.0 The importance of doubling down on improving the fundamentals. There are over 1500 Offensive Plays 5 players per team, 3 or 4 counters per player, 22,000 combinations, so we double down on that, so we had to address a lot of different things. Things that have been addressed, different types of Flare Screens, Loop Plays, weave action, dribble hand offs, weave pick and rolls, elevators, weak side doubles, and Hammer actions. We also improved the behavior towards actions and adjusted to several plays, i.e. 53 weak, quick 4 horns flare, quick 32 flare, Elbow RIP, and a whole lot more.

39m26s: Time Out Adjustments Time Out are now integrated with ACE. Types of Time outs we have added. 1. Scoreless Possessions e.g. we are not getting good shots, or the opponent is making a run, ACE can evaluate that and make the appropriate decision. 2. Shot Quality, even if the game is close in score 22 to 21 and your team had 4 or 5 possessions of bad shots, ACE will call a time out. 3. Cool down on other team "hot or top" player e.g. WestBrook, goes on a run by himself even though we are exchanging buckets in the 3rd quarter but he's heating up ACE will call a time out. 4. "Other" Time Outs e.g. like setting of records and other stuff.

41m55s: You're Tools Meaning You the Gamer. Tools at your disposal like Defensive Settings and OTFC Schemes. We introduce some new schemes this year like Jordan Rules and Grey 5 and some others. These schemes are data driven now and we can change them schematically via update. Talk of future schemes and how to address 5 out.

48m00s: Stealing of the Guard The thought process behind steals limit on ball rips, how the ball is exposed, how accurate the hand is when the ball is exposed, and who's trying to steal, you can strip jump shots, hop steps, gathers, euros, dunks ect... and you're not stuck in a animation. A bad stealer will most likely not have a successful attempt. Ball tangibility, being able to steal the ball from the blind side, off ball digs steals happen in the NBA and should happen in ours a huge focus went into making sure this was a realistic mechanic.

We had stopped rewarding players for dribbling in bad spots and in a crowd, they needed to be penalized for this behavior. We brought in some advance level players to test the mechanic and it was unanimous that those advance players and they liked the mechanic and asked that we not change it. So right now the steal mechanic is where they want it, so the User will have to adjust. We want the players to use these mechanics in our game like Protect.

Zoned In the defender zoning in on you is his best part of the Steal System we look at where you're at in relations to the offensive player, if the ball handler is in your radius and starts to dance in that spot, and you have a pick pocket badge or an elite defender and you attempt a steal when you time it right, your chance of stealing the ball is pretty high. In order for the ball handler to dance he must be outside of your radius.

The Steal System also looks at mismatches e.g. Deandre Jordan the ball handler up top and M. Conley is the defender. Conley recognizes that Jordans ball handling rating is trash so he's going to try to disrupt with pressure or steal the ball.

60m50s: Transition Defense Wasn't a ton of adjustments, but we addressed getting out of it earlier, it does it's base fundamental stuff. It is on the to do list.

61m40s: Stick Game, Right Stick Mechanic The Right Stick is handiness, so if you swipe left, you swipe with your left hand, swipe right equals right hand. Use the appropriate hand based on the location of the ball. If the ball handler has the ball to your left, his right do not try to cross his body to steal, you will be penalized or called for a foul. You can also swipe down to steal the ball.

Contest mechanic has changed, you can no longer walk around in the contest, once you contest you're committed to the contest. So flick the Right Stick up to contest and Hold the Right Stick up to have your hands up.

You can also Deny with the Right Stick. Hold Right Stick Left or Right to Deny or play the passing lanes.

Going on about off ball defensive post mechanic and new chuck mechanic and screen bump.

71m20s: Hack a Shaq/Jordan Hold RT+O/B to Off Ball foul

72m240s: That is it in a nutshell but I could be missing out on a bunch of stuff

72m50s: Q&A

I usually player lock also. Biggest thing for me is explaining the switch defense. Just because they say switch, doesn't always mean they will stay with the switch. If they can fight through and get to their man they will ignore their switch call.
