2K18: Reduce Long Passes

The devs tried to reduce the spectre that doomed 2K16 (long passes) but for the second year in a row gameplay has been reduced to inbound passes to half-court and beyond that the defense simply has no answer for. It's gotten so bad and created such a Spoiled, Entitled, Exploitative userbase that players expect these long passes to be successful....take note of what happens when this guy actually has a long pass turnover.

Its time to be alot more heavy-handed in the approach to fixing this issue once and for all. The core issue is over-accuracy: The vast majority of long passes should be turnovers out of bounds, stolen or deflected out of bounds. While defenders are more aware than they were in 2K16--this awareness is easily countered by running to an open spot on the court and passing to that area. Also, the catch shouldn't be a guarantee...where are the bobbled balls, difficult catches and balls that go off a player's hands? The passer also matters, the number guys in the entire NBA with the skill-set to throw accurate full-court passes can be counted on two hands...and even they don't make plays like that at will. Gameplay has turned something that is a highlight and RARE to something easily triggered and routine--this can't happen.

2K's gameplay will be on the grand stage next year with their E-Sports venture with the NBA. It simply can't look like this. Subtle changes will not do this year..its time to resolve this issue once and for all. Luckily, the animations we need to see more of are already in the game:

Re: 2K18: Reduce Long Passes

The problem here is the defense. A player like Kevin Love would make the pass 7/10 times, but he doesn't throw it 10 times because the defense in real life, unlike in this game, uses their eyeballs to see the ball about to fly over their head, and intercepts the pass.

Defenders in the videos you've shown are running towards the receiver but not putting up their hands or looking back at the ball, they've made the decision that once the ball is passed it's going to the receiver.

I agree the defense is a huge culprit....my other issue is that while Kevin Love is one of the best in the league at throwing the deep outlet pass, not many are. The ease that average and poor passers are making these plays is alarming.

Re: 2K18: Reduce Long Passes

It's not really the passes imo. It's the defense. It seems 2K determines beforehand if a pass will be made and once that decision is made, the defenders have no chance at stealing the pass.

Mike Conley can make that pass to KD in his sleep but the defender here (Klay Thompson) just gets completely disrespected. It's almost as if he's not even there. In real life that pass would be flying out of bounds and KD would probably be called for an offensive foul running full speed into Klay Thompson like that.

Re: 2K18: Reduce Long Passes

I hate when the CPU throws crazy accurate passes in traffic, But I don't think full court passes should result in turnovers more than they already do. I mean these guys are in the NBA. They know how to make an accurate pass to an open man.

Now if he's in traffic, that's a different story. But it really pisses me off when I pass the ball to a wide open man down court because defense fell asleep and didn't get back to stop the fast break, just for the ball to fly way over his head and out of bounds.

Also, as for you saying you don't see enough of the ball being dropped/bobbled, you might have to play the game a bit more to see this lol. Almost every time I pass the ball into the paint, my guy bobbles it around like crazy and sometimes even drops it and turns it over (on a pass from someone who is less than 5 feet away...)

I guess I just don't really see how some of these long passes are BS. The one where Richaun Holmes passed to T.J. Mcconnell on the inbound, but the ball flew out of bounds is some BS to me. I mean he was less than 30 feet away and he was wide open. If you were standing outside the three point line, you don't think you would be able to throw an accurate pass to someone under the basket?

But yes, Some of them definitely are cheesy and BS and i think the whole passing system needs to be fixed. However, Some of these are also cheesy to me in the sense that NBA players very rarely throw passes so drastically off the mark to a wide open man who's less than 30-40 feet away. Sometimes there are miscommunications, but a player isn't just gonna throw the ball out of bounds because "it slipped" or something like that

Re: 2K18: Reduce Long Passes

A one-handed bullet 3/4 court pass in his sleep? wow...I doubt it....but OK. It seems like you guys are saying NBA players don't make bad passes...they happen every game several times a game. I'd urge watching more basketball--you might be surprised.

IMO the issue is twofold...pass accuracy thats too high and poor defender reaction.

I was fine with Holmes' bad pass...it happens--and just meant that he isn't perfect.
