Re: EA Sports MMA Available Now, Post Your Impressions Here

This game just suffered from a bad release date timing and a bad demo. It's a shame really because some things they really did right, like leg kicks actually matter.

However they did mess up with a lack of positions and moves that are discipline specific, like the following:

Can't knee from side control
Can't throw elbows from side control
No single collar tie
No muay thai whip control
No submissions from half guard, neither from the top or bottom
No butterfly sweeps
No cage interaction for the most part
No north south position

I would have liked them to have had the following:

Wrestlers having more different kinds of take downs, like belly to belly suplexes, variations of single leg and double leg takedowns, wizards, single collar tie for dirty boxing.

Judo - having their own takedowns, sweeps from the bottom, submission holds

Sambo - having their own leg lock submission moves and leg trips

BJJ - more use of the rubber guard and rubber guard specific moves, kimirua sweeps, standing kimuras, submissions from every position whether on top or bottom

Kickboxing - more head kicks and body kicks

Muay Thai - more leg kicks and elbow strikes combos. Muay thai whip. A much stronger plum hold.

OVERALL:

More visible body and facial damage is MUCH needed. I want to see swollen eyes and if you get a swollen eye, your ability to block stuff from that side of your face should be reduced by 80%. Kind of like how they had it in Fight Night 4. Same thing with body shots.

Body shots should cause more permanent damage to your stamina and movement. I remember in Fight Night 4, if you constantly worked the body, that person moved SLOW and was gasping for air for the rest of the fight.

That reversal from side control that flips the person on top of you completely over putting you into side control needs to be eliminated, that is so unrealistic. Nobody is that damn strong that they can flip somebody over from side control off their back like that.

More big slams. And slams over all should cause more temporary lost to your stamina. I mean if you get slammed hard in real life, you will be gasping for air for a good minute or two. So therefore in the game if you suffer a big slam, half of your stamina should be gone for 30 seconds at least.

Nothing worse then doing a throw and see the cpu still have full stamina, blocking everything you do IMMEDIATELY after being slammed.

Also some slams, like reversal unexpected type of slams and takedowns should stun your opponent. Since in real life, the move you didn't see coming does the most damage to you.

Fighters in this game need more weight to them as well. No way should a guy weighing less then me by a good amount or a guy with a smaller frame should be pushing a much bigger guy off of them or pushing them around the ring with ease.

I was that greek guy Zrappolous or whatever his name is against Aoki. Aoki has a much smaller frame, but yet was tossing me around like I was a tooth pick. Even held me down with ease and when I got on top of him, he pushed me off with ease.

So more realistic weight and movement you can do based off your weight, body frame needs to be added. Kind of like you know when Couture fought Brock or Tim Slyvia. Randy was the smaller fighter and just couldn't lift those guys up with ease and toss them ya know.

He had to drag them to the ground, time his shots to catch them off balance with a single leg or leg trip. But no way did he push those guys off of him with ease when he was on the bottom that is for sure.

OTHER THAN THOSE THINGS:

This is one hell of a game.

How is the career? I am thinking about getting it today, but probably just for offline? Is this game better than UFC 2009 (not 2010 because that was a step backwards)

I have decided that I enjoy this game more offline than online. It was the exact opposite for me with the UFC games. I play on legend(hardest) and when you get beat it doesnt feel cheap (aside from chokes but if your smart you wont allow your self to be put in a choke.) If you dont fight to your fighters strengths and to your opponents weaknesses, you will get beat.

As for being better than UFC, it is and it isnt. People got so mad at UFC 10 they put blinders on towards this game. This game does so many great things it would be a shame to pass up on it. At the same time its not as perfect or different as people would mention.

Look at it this way

UFC = Madden
EA MMA = APF 2k8

Its generally the more realistic game with a much smaller following. Its a high quality game that is still missing some things.

Well being that NOW people are spamming certain moves, no it isn't as fun as it use to be. Like anything, give it time and people will learn the exploits of a game and use it over and over again online.

The Live fight cards you can make with your friends is a blast though

Just picked this up today along with NBA Jam, only had a couple of games but it seems good. When i have a few days off work i will be able to get into it more.

I am more of an offline player in all my games so the online aspect doesn't bother me. I only have live for updates and downloads. I can tell its going to take a bit of getting used to but i think once i get into career mode i will really enjoy it.

Looking forward to getting time to play this.

Re: EA Sports MMA Available Now, Post Your Impressions Here

All they really need to do to make this game realistic is tone down the amount of punches that you're capable of throwing throughout a fight. For a game that emphasized stamina and not button mashing it's pretty disappointing how irrelevant stamina is to the standup game.

Secondly, the ground game is great, aside from the fact that the guy on top doesn't have a big enough advantage. It doesn't make any sense that those heel kicks from the bottom, which are so easy to spam, do more damage than my punches from top.

So online is really a mixed bag. When your playing guys who want to throw 500+ punches then that's when the game isn't much fun. But, when you run into those who want a sim fight that's when EA MMA plays better than any other fight game, UFC or boxing. Also, sometimes it's very hard to find a match, sometimes I'm waiting a long while before I get matched with anyone. With that said, I want EA MMA to do well, but if you're still on the fence wait for another patch, the last one didn't address the key issues that would turn this game into a proper sim.

The only real issue I am seeing online is the teep kick spam is STUPID!!! Outside of that one exploit I can hang with just about any other button masher.
