Should a casual fan buy this game?

Curious if there are ways to speed through the game, ie- play only 3 innings, or crucial moments? I find it hard to play franchise mode in games because of the time commitments required, would be keen to check this game out however.

Quick counts are an option
You can save your game and go at your own pace through the season (why more sports games don't have this is beyond me)
Player Lock (you play as one player through some fielding situations if you'd like and every at bat or until the manager pulls the starting pitcher)
Quick Manage which is sim text kind of mode where you can choose an action and it'll sim the outcome.

I sometimes play 3 innings and sim the rest whether it's the 1st 3, middle 3 or final 3 in some of the franchises I've done

Re: Should a casual fan buy this game?

I play the first, sim 2-5, and play out the rest. That way I get some time with my starter and get to do all the bullpen management unless my starter gets shelled. Only negatives are the pitch counts are unrealistically low in the innings you sim and the cpu will sometimes do some wacky stuff like pinch hit for the pitcher in the bottom of the 5th and when I take over in the 6th and I’m prompted that I have a position player on the mound there is nobody warming up in the bullpen. Yet nearly every time my starter is pitching well they’ll have a pitcher warming up in the 6th when I take over even though here is no reason to make a pitching change.

Honestly the offline conquest and player challenges in Diamond Dynasty are a blast, and the Conquest maps are 3 inning games. Those modes in this year's game, no lie, made me a big fan of the sport again. They're just fun.

This is what scea us trying to do by not allowing shorter seasons/ 3 inning game seasons etc

If you're a casual fan, maybe Super Mega Baseball 3 would be a better option? Being a huge fan of The Show since the PS1 days, I've had a blast so far with SMB 3!
