Bunting... Help

Hello all
New to MLB, elderly, UK.
Can I ask a really stupid question?
Why, when and what reason would one use a bunt?
I fail to see how it would ever work in real life and in the game.
Obviously its a tactic, but when /why would I implement it in a game.
Please accept my apologise for my ignorance, but I want to play as realistic as possible and not utilising this move on my franchise would seem amis.

Re: Bunting... Help

If a player knows how to bunt well it can be very effective as the ball can be placed in a certain location nearly at will.

The most often use of the bunt is the sacrifice bunt. With runners on base and less than two outs it is used to move the runners to the next base at the cost of one out.

Remember, a fouled bunt with 2 strikes is an out so never bunt with two strikes.

Also the sacrifice bunt can be a viable strategy when a weak hitter is at bat, particularly pitchers in the National League.

If I have a good bunter at the plate with a guy at 2nd and zero outs I’ll try to bunt him over to 3rd. After he’s on 3rd with just one out a deep fly ball, a grounder or a hit (obviously) will score the guy from third.

That being said I wouldn’t bunt with an elite hitter.

After 150 years, people in America are slowly realising what you picked up on instinctively lol apparently bunting is bad when there are 0 outs, 1 out or 2 outs. Any other time is alright to bunt I'm stubborn, I'll still bunt with my pitchers when a runner is on base. Even if there are2 strikes, I'd rather strikeout than risk grounding into a double play. If I cant afford to give away an out with a pitcher then I'll consider a pinch hitter. Also, this is for sac bunting. Drag bunting is a different animal and I'll rarely drag with a pitcher

So as another Brit who has fallen in love with the game of baseball (almost as much as I like cricket...…)

The main purpose of the bunt is when you have a guy coming to the plate who is a terrible hitter - and you have runners on base - to make sure that his inevitable out is productive.

If he hits a good bunt, then even if he is out - at least the other runners have been able to move up a base. Much better than if he struck out, popped out or, worse, ground weakly into a double play.

The alternative is if you have a batter with a ton of speed - if they're good enough at it, then they can bunt as a means of getting a hit.

Re: Bunting... Help

Study the pitcher at the plate if his bunt rating is sub 60 good chance he'll pop out or rocket it right at the first baseman.
