Question about vision

What exactly is the vision rating for? I always thought it was an AI/sim rating that determined how likely a player is to take a strike (ai) or strike out (sim). Thought the same thing about discipline for taking balls and walks. I see people talking on Facebook about vision controlling the size of the pci but I thought that was the contact rating that did that. Anyone know for sure?

What exactly the vision rating does varies widely depending on the batting interface used. For example, it has a massive impact on directional, but only effects the height of the PCI and the likelihood of any contact on balls that aren't fully "squared up" in zone.

Basically vision dictates how well a batter can square a pitch up. I have Nelson Cruz who has a vision rating in the 30's and he will "just miss" a pitch a lot more then Kyle Seager will who has a vision rating in the low 80's.

Contact rating is basically directly related to batting average. In other words it dictates whether you will hit it at someone for an out or hit it past them for a single, double etc.

Discipline is directly related to the batter chasing pitches out of the zone or being patient and taking those pitches.

Perfect example is Jose Bautista who has like a 99 discipline but low vision so he won't chase but you can challenge him if need be as he will struggle to square it up at times.

Back in 13 or 14 I simulated a few seasons in franchise and edited batters contact, vision and discipline to see what they all do.

99 contact with 0 vision and 0 discipline had an average batting average (.260 ish) with tons of strikeouts and almost no walks.

99 contact with 99 vision and 0 discipline had a high average (.300+), low walk rate but very low strikeout rate.

99 contact with 99 discipline and 0 vision had a high average, high walk rate and high strikeout rate.

contact=batting average
vision=strikeout rate
discipline=walk rate

PCI size is mainly a contact thing, minor changes from vision and discipline.

Contact=getting hard contact, more line drives, better chance to get a hit.

Vision=making contact at all. Low vision is a high whiff rate and the people you want to use a contact swing with when you get two strikes. High vision can fight off a lot of pitches and make for long at bats.

Discipline only makes more walks by making it easier to check your swing.
PCI is an overall representation of contact, vision, AND power. It is also adjusted by the ratings of the opposing pitcher.

If a human-controlled batter has high discipline, does it effect how well or how frequently he check swings? Or is it no effect at all?

Discipline buffs check swing ability/rate, power debuffs it.

This isn't exact, but rule of thumb if a player has more discipline than power, then they will have above average check swing ability.

It does have an effect. I have had batters check their swing when I thought they didn't and not check when I barely touched the button.
