Baserunning – am I doing something wrong?

I thought I saw somebody talking about this in another thread but I can't seem to find it, the comment I was looking for. I've had several shots into the gap that are definitely balls you would run into a double. And I've been clicking the L1 button as my base runner gets close to first base trying to make him continue on to second base. But it seems despite frantically clicking the L1 button numerous times the baserunner always seems to stop at first and then only proceeds after I click the L1 button again. When it's a shot in the gap that you wanted to go for a double, do you just click the L1 button one time before he gets to first base or do you click it once as he reaches first base or do you need to click it multiple times? Or is this a bug in the baserunning?

I've been thrown out trying to get the second a couple times so I'm finding this frustrating. Is this a bug?

Try holding it down instead of clicking it

Just hold down L1 until he's on his way to second. This is the most effective way, but it will also keep sending all other runners that were on base.

I hold down L1 until the indicator shows the next base.

I guess I am just weird because unless the bases are loaded, I always individually select each runner and tell them where to run right after I make contact with the ball.

Try selecting your hitter right after you get the hit and press triangle. He should still round first correctly if you press it early enough.

I could be missing something but I am not getting thrown out at second very often so I guess it works...

If you wait to press L1 when the runner is too close to first he breaks down his run it will take a second press to get him going again. If you press while he is at max stride a click is sufficient and he will keep running seamlessly.

This is what I do too. I have a lot more control over what my runners are doing with this. For example if I have a speedy runner at 1st I might send him to 3rd right away on a ball to right field when I wouldn't want a slower runner at the plate to try for 2nd. You have to be quick about it, but once you get it down, it's the best method.
