Franchise Questions (draft related)

So given the fact that the draft really isn't realistic in terms of players / drafting what do you guys do when it comes to the amateur draft?

Running a 30 team control franchise forces you to either sim or pick each pick and I'm trying to get a feel for what everyone does when it comes to pickin for each team. I mean it feels like none of the top rated players at each position are ever above a D potential in my experience. Do you guys just go back and edit players in the offseason or what.
Seems like teams would run out of talent eventually given the lack of quality players in each draft. Think there was like 3 or 4 A potential players in the draft I just did (picked recommended for all teams for like 4 rounds n simmed the rest).

Also when it comes to scouting what is your strategy. I usually just let the CPU do it but I can tell they do a lousy job of it lol.

Finally, why does it seem that the best rated players in the draft are always a TERRIBLE potential. I drafted this first baseman, 20 years old, with incredible power (about 70% of the bar full on both righties/lefties), and above average contact. Too bad he's an F potential. Any ways to alleviate this? I know we can't edit potential so how do you guys get around that kinda stuff.

I've always simmed and tried to hire the best scouts I could in the offseasons. Other than that, I don't really mess with the draft.

I run single team franchises and this has been my strategy...

I can GM the heck out of a NFL or NBA team, but I'm half lost when it comes to the complexity of running a MLB roster with 3 active teams and a "practice squad" single A club...

Things like "Should I participate in the Rule 5 draft or not?" is a similar issue as well as how do I determine which players to resign and for how long, etc...

Can anybody find any "GM Tips" threads?

I've looked, but haven't had any luck yet...

This thread has me questioning a lot of the GM stuff, in addition to the draft...

???

Thanks!

Re: Franchise Questions (draft related)

I have never done a successful draft myself in this game. This year is the 1st year I am doing 30 team control while GM'ing one team and playing the other. So I am cheating a bit by using the 2 teams I control to double up on the scouting getting the potential ratings. Using 30 team you can cheat more by going through what the AI has scouted to get more bang for your scouting buck. When I get there I was just gonna draft recommended like you did for all the other 28 teams and use my combined notes for my 2 teams.

Re: Franchise Questions (draft related)

Yea I mean I drafted recommended for everyone and I look at what was drafted for them and it was just like bleh.

I mean I did manage to snag one B potential 1B that has like 0 power at all (his bar is literally almost invisible) but then I have this 1B also that has like Barry Bonds power but is an F potential.

Makes me really wanna start my franchise over (since I forgot to save pre draft sadly) or start a new one cause there is only like 2 or so teams that had an actual draft of quality players.

Also I don't like that I simmed from rounds 5+ and that meant like half the teams didn't even choose players. I feel like this will make for a lack of depth in the farm system (no matter how ****ty the prospects) that I don't wanna see.

So basically out of that draft my team (the Braves) got 2 first basemen with different pros/cons and that was about it. I can swap the power hitter to 3B but it doesn't fix his potential issue.

Re: Franchise Questions (draft related)

This seems to be a real dilemma for me too. I use the latest and greatest OSFM rosters (not a knock, they are great), but then use 30 team control and have to settle for a "best rcomended" pick for CPU teams in the amatuer draft. If the CPU lineup/rotation logic doesn't bother me, am I better off NOT using 30 team control and letting the CPU decide for themselves who to draft? The crux of the matter is this.......when I use 30 team control and select the recommended player with the square button............Is that the same as NOT using 30 team control and allowing the CPU to make it's own decision?

Re: Franchise Questions (draft related)

I guess the only way to make it a best case scenario as possible for each team's draft would be to use the scouting from every team to make sure that people are getting a / b potential players instead of D and F's for every single one. That would bea helluva pain staking process.

Usually this lack of depth is fixed after the first year. Try doing 1 or 2 more years and drafting and then see.
