I just think Cosart had a higher upside than those guys. Don't let Dallas Keuchel fool you. He's having a good year, but I expect him to drop off after this year, same with McHugh.

Keuchel hasn't done much until this year. Look at him on FanGraphs. McHugh just seems like he will just stop being good at some point.

Nothing about what they've done this year seems unsustainable. There is every reason to state that Keuchel has been every bit as good as his ERA suggests and McHugh has been even better.

Cosart's upside as a starter was a 3. Pretty much all the scouts and major publications agreed that he would probably play better at closer because he doesn't a have a real 3rd weapon and lacks the control that would make him an elite starter. Last season Cosart walked more than he struck out and his FIP was 3 points higher than his ERA.

That being said, Cosart did have a higher ceiling than Keuchel and McHugh before the season... And then Keuchel's control and pitchability got better. On top of that Keuchel just threw a 4 hit complete game against the Oakland A's, the best team in all of baseball right now. McHugh on the other hand suddenly flashed an elite level curveball to go with good control and a few other above average pitches.

Essentially McHugh and Keuchel are better locks to remain in the rotation and be very productive, moreso than Cosart who is destined for a role in the bullpen.

I understand what you guys are saying, but he is 23, he's still got time to improve. I look back at the trade now and like what we got back, I just had a good feeling about Cosart.
