The bad commentary thread

I can't believe how big a step back the commentary took this year. The rest of the game is great, don't get me wrong, but we've gone from a game that I would deliberately listen to, to one that I practically have to mute.

Just experienced a common example - my opposing pitcher gets injured and is taken out of the game.

Vasgersian: And... oh boy, we touched on this at the start of the broadcast... (no, he didn't)

After the new pitcher's first pitch:

Hudler: And I'm still scratching my head... why do you let a pitcher throw one pitch in an inning and then take him out? (because he was injured...)

After the second pitch:

Campbell: And kind of surprising they'd make a move here with the shutout going (he was INJURED).

Not to mention my personal anti-favourite - after the first walk you draw IN EVERY GAME, the pitching coach comes to the mound (stupid enough) and Hudler treats us to his voice-cracked "quit walkin' guys, let's go!"

I figure there's a plethora of bad commentary out there I haven't even heard yet. Here are a few more I'm sure others cringe at:

Hudler: (cracked voice) Why ya swingin at the first pitch and helpin' the guy out?

Hudler: I'm swingin at that one up here, that's right there.

Campbell: We'll take a look at this one from field level... he held up in time but that one's in there for strike three (not annoying on its own, but because this is played after EVERY CHECK SWING STRIKEOUT).

Hudler: And he's already given up two walks in the inning... (usually said when a pitcher has only given up one walk)

Campbell: And with the loss here, these guys will fall to two games under .500 (said every time you're trailing in a game, regardless of whether you'll actually fall to two under .500)

Campbell: And he picks up save #x of the year (always the wrong number).

I think a lot of the stupidity comes from the fact that they've scripted Hudler as a colour commentator who thinks the players can hear him... when no real colour commentator tries to talk to the players.

That and the general inaccuracy of a lot of the commentary too. And Vasgersian questioning the umps on every other pitch (no real play by play man does that so often).

I hear that one every single game.

And today, I heard Campbell say in the 9th that the closer was "looking for his 3rd save of the season". On the next pitch, the game ends. Camp then says that the pitcher did a nice job in "recording his 5th save of the year".

I agree with you. It's bad. Lots of mistakes.

I hate when they talk about umpires bad calls. That NEVER happens in real life. If it did a lot of people would be fired.

Re: The bad commentary thread

Just had another fun moment. First pitch made by opposing closer, Hudler notes he could get his first save of the season. Second pitch, Campbell notes the same thing. You'd think they'd build against this kind of silly repetition.

Not to mention the Marlins just got a combined no-hitter against me (starter was injured in the 6th) and the commentary acts like it was just another game. Sigh.

I've also played a game where the starting pitcher is absolutely shelled the first two innings for 5 runs. In the third, he retires them in order and Matty V says (paraphrasing) that he's been "in control of this one from the start". Oh really?

I just can't fathom how so many people swear the commentary is so great in this game. There's tons and tons of lines. I only played RTTS so I never heard these lines. I'm now playing franchise and nothing new has been said yet...

I don't see "how so many people swear" the commentary is so great. Don't know where that comes from. I think most people agree Matt does a really good job, Dave needs reworked and Rex needs to go. That's the consensus I'm hearing. Heck, I've completely turned the commentary off in all my games Rex is so annoying, but I'm not hearing all the praise you seem to infer.

To me, the past praises came from the fact that their delivery was very natural, especially Matt V. They talk about things that don't normally get talked about in video games. Other announcing teams in other games verge on being robotic, which I never felt The Show was. When they first introduced the new commentary a few years back, it was fantastic. But as this thread has pointed out, there seems to be more mistakes and more repetitive lines this year than ever before.

But I'm not seeing all this praise you're swearing you see anymore. I guess that's your 2K agenda coming through again.
