Base running

Could someone explain the directions of hitting the left stick and "desired base" (of X, O and triangle) for advancing a single runner?

Let's say I have runners at the corners with one out and hit a fly to right. I want to advance the runner at third home but I don't want to try advancing the runner at first. Do I hit the left stick down and square because I want the runner at third to advance?

Thanks.

Press the L-stick to the left and the X button. The light for your player on third base should start blinking when you hold the L-stick on his direction, that is how you know you're directing him to a base.

Push the left analog stick toward the runner you want to control. In this case, left. The icon representing your runner on third will start to blink in the baserunning window indicating he is the one you will be issuing a base running command to...
Now hit the base you want him to advance to... In this case, X.

O = 1rst
A = 2nd
[] = 3rd
X = Home

You can use this scheme while runners are on base or moving on the base line (just make sure the icon is blinking in the base window first) to advance or return to a base or multiple bases. For example, if you thought the fly ball was going to get passed the outfielder and rattle up againt the wall, you could hit left to select the runner on 3rd and hit X to send him home, and then push right to select the runner on first and hit X to send him home. Now you can sit back and watch. But as the runner from 1rst is rounding 2nd, you see that the outfielder got to the ball faster than you expected, and you realize your runner will be thrown out at 3rd. Now you push up (i.e. toward that runners icon in the base running window), and when his icon starts blinking, press A to send him back to 2nd.

Re: Base running

I am curious, because I haven't tested this out yet...but I remember in last year's game you were supposedly able to make all runners move up by L1 (R1 to send all back), but I felt this function often didn't work as it should and the players just never reacted. I got into the habit of manually selecting each runner and telling em where to go as fast as I could...this would occasionally cost me a fraction of a second with one of the runners, to my disadvantage.

I was wondering if anyone has tried the L1/R1 this year to advance/retreat baserunners???

Yes it works. L1/R1. I used it last year as well, never had any real problems.

Re: Base running

Thanks for the help. I think it was drilled in my mind from other past games to do it the other way around: use the buttons to select the runner, then the direction pad/stick to go in the direction you desire.

Thanks for the info on that!

Re: Base running

I've got a quick situational question regarding base running.

I had a situation where I had runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs. The batter at the plate had a full count. So, you would want the runner on 1st to be moving but not the runner on 3rd. Well, I set it up for my runner on 1st to steal 2nd but then the pitcher did a pick-off move(I didn't have a lead) and my runner just took off towards second and he ended up getting tagged out. Typically, you don't start running until you're certain that pitcher is going home but I don't think there's a way to set that up since we're in the process of batting at the same time. Now also, when I only have someone on first and try to steal, I use L2 and whenever the pitcher tries to pick-off then my runner tries to get back to 1st. Does anyone know what I might've done wrong or the correct way to execute this?

Re: Base running

I am still trying to get the hang of the new baserunning setup.

Q1: Where I'm having the most trouble is when the runner is getting close to a new base, I often find myself still unable to highlight the runner because I'm pointing the left stick at the wrong direction (usually the prior one).

To illustrate what I mean, there's a runner on 1st and the batter hits a ball into the gap. As the guy on first is about to approach 2nd, I decide I want him to go to third. I get confused, do I press Left-stick Up and Square or b/c he hasn't reached 2nd yet (but about to) I still press Left-stick Left and Square. Also the confusion gets compounded when I decide I want to stretch the batter to go for a double. Do I press Left-stick and Triangle ?

Q2: If there's a guy on first, and the batter gets a hit, how do I control the batter ? before he reaches 1st ? (like I want to tell him to go for a double).

-any clarification would be very helpful, thanks!
